And why do the only brands that offer a non-alcoholic version happen to be the worst of the worst tasting beers?

Some of the European NA's are not bad tasting and for someone who likes the taste of beer without the alcohol, for whatever reason, it is a pretty decent substitute.

The only issue I have is the price of that stuff, especially the imports as they cost as much as a real beer, and that sucks.

St. Pauli and Becks put out non-alcohol beer which aren't too bad.

Non-alcoholic beer makes more sense to me than diet (light) beer. If your counting your calories, beer should not be your beverage of choice. With non-alcoholic beer, those recovering can still enjoy a beer, or as stated above, perhaps someone is a DD and making an intelligent choice.

My FIL does not drink alcohol but loves the taste of beer so he drinks non-alcoholic beer (to the extent it even tastes like beer).

There are a lot more options these days for non-alcoholic beer that aren't too bad. Some people like the taste of beer and don't want to drink alcohol.

Both times my wife was pregnant she drank them. Most are bad, but I found that Beck's was tolerable. Then someone brought her some "kinder beer" from Germany that was at least ok. Better than anything we have here.

Pregnant women.

Seriously, I stopped drinking alcohol for a while about twenty years ago, but I love beer. So I tried them ALL. Some were actually not bad at all.

I liked Kaliber from Guinness best of all.
