Its a shame BR no longer has any mid-tier golf clubs

Fairwood used to have a lot of good players as members, Sherwood had a pretty good group too.
I miss these types of clubs around the city.
Island is nice but its 30 mins from BR and not too close to be able to run over there after work and practice or play a couple of holes.
Was anyone here a member of Fairwood?
BR basically has CCLA, BRCC and BREC, nothing in between.
Briarwood wasn't a bad spot either to play occasionally.
This is the reason a round at Santa Maria takes 4.5 hours.

Hard to compete with an over-saturated, government-subsidized golf market.
Especially when the big dollar members would likely choose BRCC, LACC, or Uclub instead.

Briarwood was a favorite of mine. If I remember right, after 3pm it was $18 with a cart. Never really crowded on weekdays.

That course was apparently in bad shape and about to close till it was bought a couple years ago. Guy is having a special “pay what you want” just to up the traffic.
You tried to prove a point and played yourself. Lots of courses like that are tough to appeal to enough people to stay afloat. Keeping an affluent membership while also getting enough public play.
Alabama does it way better with comparable demographics and city sizes.

This. Those clubs couldn't compete against a government-like organization who doesn't care how much money they lose.

I would also add that many of the mid-tier clubs just don't have the money and the members are really cheap. When anything expensive happens the members will just leave the club rather than stepping up. That is why they are members at mid-tier clubs.
And expensive things will come up at golf courses even mid-tier ones.

Pine Forest is a really fun course.
What's stopping you from playing a few holes after work at a BREC course? Twilight walking is cheaper than range balls

I think of midtier clubs, my first thought is something in the $2,000 a year range with no steep initiation fee.
We have those surrounding the BR area on every side, but nothing in the city. I'd dump Pelican, Greystone, The Bluffs, and The Island all into that category. Carter could also go into that category, if you wanted.

U-Club isn’t that expensive especially if you want something in Baton Rouge.
If you don’t want to join a club then it is best to join a league. Baton Rouge Golf Tour is a good one and they play more than just league rounds throughout the week / month.

What’s the initiation fee and monthly dues? Is it possible to get a weekend tee time anymore?

Disclosure, I am not a member there. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I believe the up front is around $4k and the monthly is $250 - $300. They run specials where you can pay $4k over time.
I don't know about tee times. But, the OP, said he was looking for a place to go after work to practice/play.
I think those dollars are pretty reasonable for a club in town. Not to get in a St. George discussion

Man do I miss my days at Shenandoah CC, my parents still live on old 14. Still know that course like the back of my hand.

Now that I really think about it BR had a shite load of golf courses considering its population.

Unfortunately, BREC / LSU has stayed open while the equal clubs closed. It would be awesome if that were opposite.

I was a member at Fairwood back in the 90’s....decent course, good members, had to drive it straight. My mom would drop me off in the morning and I’d play or hit range balls all day until 4 or 5. I think I went from shooting in the low 100’s to the 70’s in one summer. I would kill for a similar setup here in Houston for my kids, but that’s probably not gonna happen unless I become an OT baller.
