Have you ever seen a good rap show?

Hip hop, for all of its contributions, is notorious for horrible live performances. From being out of the comfort of the studio to the circus shows onstage that are "hype men", rap concerts tend to be more about the party than any semblance of artistic merit.
The Beastie Boys were certainly an exception to the rule, and given their eccentric background it isn't that surprising. As far as I know they are the only group in the genre whose fans taped and continue to circulate shows.
More surprising were Snoop Dogg and Mannie Fresh. Snoop's show (2009) I saw had a great band backing him. They even had a few segues in the set. Mannie Fresh is really just dj'ing but it's pretty damn good as he spins stuff outside of just Cash Money and the like.
ETA:
Chali 2 na is good live
Ghostface was disappointing
Atmosphere and Aesop Rock were nap inducing

Bun B was pretty good last year. That's about all I got.
Lil Wayne was arguably the worst attempt at a concert I have ever seen.

Run DMC at LSU in 2000 was amazing. Ice Cube opening for Korn in 1998 was pretty good. Ludacris at Groovin on the Grounds was pretty good too. If ICP counts, I've enjoyed all of the shows I've seen from them. First one was especially wild.

ICP is one I definitely need to see.
I'm bummed I missed Outkast on that reunion tour they did in 2014.

I forgot about Outkast. That was a ton of fun. We were gifted VIP passes to Hangout, so chilling on a raft in a pool drinking free beer during the show was one of the better times I've ever had at a show.

Also Redman and Method Man, early 2000 HOB

J Cole at the varsity a couple years ago was actually really great.

Cypress Hill used to put on a fantastic show, but they played with actual musicians backing them up.

Wu Tang 1997. Opened for Rage Against the Machine.

Busta Rhymes was great live in 2002 when I saw him twice. Tons of energy and he'd do light speed a capella stuff that was really impressive.
Personality and skill are pretty much prerequisites bc the backing is usually just a DJ.

J Cole at Soul Kitchen in Mobile for the Forest Hills Drive tour was legit INCREDIBLE. But he's more of a poet/lyricist so I knew it would be

Saw Run DMC with Beastie Boys opening in 80s. Also saw a show with Kool Moe Dee, Erik B and Rakim, Dougee Fresh, and Ice T when colors came out. Both shows were amazing.

I saw Big Boi open for Shinedown at the PMAC. I wasn't really paying attention but he seemed lame anyway.

I was at that show too. I was on the floor right up near the stage. Big Boi was really lame. Shinedown was alright. Not a band I’d pay more than $40 to see, so I definitely got my money’s worth at Groovin’ on the Grounds.
