Overall selection where I live is better and has much more interesting food.
But the downside is that good cajun restaurants are hard to come by. The only thing that surprised me that I found is lacking in most other cities than BR is the Mediterranean food / Lebanese food. BR has some of the best and most authentic that you'll find. I've been to Chicago's greek town area and I've tried this cuisine in many different cities and at many different places in my town and it doesn't hold a candle to what BR has.
All the other ethnic food is pretty much better in bigger cities. Asian and Mexican are world's better in TX.

North Louisiana isn't really known for food.
Not to the extent that south LA is, but I assure you, people up north are home cooking just the same.

Texas, especially Houston and Dallas, have some damn good Asian.
I'm biased, but I don't think many places do Mexican or BBQ better than Texas. BBQ is definitely more subjective since I prefer brisket.

I always find it interesting how personally Louisiana people take the topic of food. Like the thought that other places have food that might be better is not only ridiculous, it’s offensive.
Same here. I love the F&D Board, but some of the posts here are comical.

I've lived away from Louisiana for 8 years in Columbia, MO and Baltimore, MD. This is what I learned:
We are fortunate to have authentic Mexican restaurants in South Louisiana. I guess it's b.c. we are not that far from the border.
It's not like that in the Midwest. Shockingly, neither the East Coast.
In Baltimore, there is no such thing as a Chinese buffet. Chinese is order out. I found one buffet in the suburbs and it was terrible.
Don't waste your money on Midwest seafood.
Kansas City BBQ is legit.
Steamed Crabs in Baltimore are legit.
Maryland crab cakes are just meh.
Missouri produces great wine.

You like other place's Greek and Lebanese? Compared to Arzi, serops and albasha?
Simple plate lunch Pilaf, cut schwarma, humus, and a greek salad.... should be as standard as cheeseburger and fries.
I'd find it hard to believe that you can't find something equally as good in San Diego or San Fransisco but I haven't tried those cuisines in those cities so I won't pretend to know any better.
That being said I do think the Lebanese food is pretty good in Baton Rouge for the most part.

Not even close. The food in Florida is made for people from the north who think pepper is hot and spicy. There have been a few places that have opened in my area by people from Louisiana and some have been good but not as good as food from Louisiana.

Maybe the confusion is not knowing the difference between Greek and Middle Eastern/Arabic food???

I absolutely love Cajun and Creole food. LA is somewhat unique in that it has its own food culture and cuisine that has been around for centuries. Over that time, restaurants and even home cooks have learned to cook those dishes better than anyone in the country. Even if it's not traditional Cajun or Creole, cooks are using lessons from their native food and applying them to other cuisines with great results.
I agree that this rich history makes LA the home of some REALLY great food covering many different cuisines. But to say places like SF, Chicago, NYC, Houston, etc., other places with rich ethnic cultures, don't have amazing food as well? Nah..gotta disagree strongly.

I love brisket and pork, but as I said earlier in this thread the dozen or so NC bbq places I visited were, at best, decent and seemed to mail it in. In Texas, places like La Barbecue and Louis Mueller are memorable and amazing. Hell, even Rudy's extra moist was more pleasurable than anything I had in NC.

The variety is better than in BR. I lived in the Northeast and now Atlanta, and it’s considerably better. Italian, Asian and Portuguese/Spanish to name a few. Sure there are things you can’t get or make yourself, but on the whole it’s better. I make a good jambalaya, gumbo and etouffee. Other than boudin, what else do you need? And maybe finding good sausage.
I find myself disappointed when I go back to BR, whether it’s the lack or variety or the service/quality.

Obviously taste is subjective and we can only go off our own experience . . .
Food elsewhere is nowhere as good as in LA. The handful of things that are keepers in TX are BBQ and beef fajitas at Lupe's. Everything is else is relatively bland.
Heck, there's more flavor in a bite of Popeyes spicy than most other ethnic dishes.

I agree, it's nostalgia. When I go back to where I grew up I still insist on eating at some absolute shitholes, even though I know the food isn't as good as my mind thinks it is.
People are especially bad about this with the local dive Mexican joint thy grew up eating at.
THIS
I currently live in Austin, surrounded by Tex-Mex and tacos, yet I still can't find a place that will live up in my mind to fricking Las Palmas in BR. We used to go there so much in college that I have built it up to be much better than it is.

BR's Lebanese scene is criminally underrated. I've been to many cities who can't come close to matching what BR has for Lebanese food.
I crave that shite all the time.

You’ve got to be the only person in the world who says “Chinese food in San Francisco? Naw baw, give me some Chinese food from Lafayette Louisiana! That’s the good stuff!”
No shite, I thought this would be a threat about how nobody can quite match South LA cuisine, which is a fair argument
This dude is talking about how Ethiopian and med food in California can't rival LA?
I'm sure LA BBQ > California, but it's not like Louisiana is prized for that either
WTF

Georgia has never been an elite BBQ state, but Atlanta is hitting its stride in no small part because we've got several Texas-influenced places making great brisket and combining that with very good pulled pork that is difficult to find in Texas.
