Kids and eczema - update page 2

so my 5 month old has been battling eczema on his face for a few months now, and it's painfully frustrating as a parent to see him suffer as he is, always trying to scratch his face, rubbing his face, etc. he'll sleep maybe an hour an most at a time before waking up and going ham on his face. frustrating.
I'm sure this is a common problem for small kids but what, if any remedies exist?
we went to a pediatric dermatologist that prescribed him some antibiotics for oral treatment and hydrocortisone for topical. this hasn't worked as well as we've wanted.
now we're onto eczema honey. desperation is setting in.

Should he see an allergist?

Both my kids had it, usually the topical ointments were enough.
Most kids grow out of it. Some dont. Just be careful because scratching it and biting at it can cause scarring. My niece had it pretty severe and even she grew out if it.
Just be patient and be very aware of what you bathe them with, wash their clothes with, and etc.

I've dealt with it all my life. Coconut oil baths and using it as a moisturizer is helping me but if it wants to ruin my day, it doesn't give a frick what remedy I'm using.

Aveno oatmeal lotion after baths
Allergy to formula or something you are eating if breastfeeding
That cleared ours up once we pinpointed it.
He's 4, and has grown out of the dietary allergy but will still start breaking out without the lotion after baths.

I have a cousin who has had it all her life. We nicknamed her Crusty when we were kids.

Hey OP - don’t let your kid be friends with kids like BRgettgenet.

Aquaphor
Mixed with hydrocortisone

My son has it, but it's probably more mild than what yours is experiencing. We just used aquaphor healing ointment and I believe his bath wash is for eczema relief as well. He didn't really get it on his face as much as his body though.
I hope you figure it out. I hate seeing baby's in discomfort.

Try using Aquaphor and Aveeno. If that doesn't help go back to the dermatologist or pediatrician for a different prescription.

If your wife is still producing try adding breast milk to his honey lotions. Worked wonders on my first kid to the point that breakouts were almost 100% eliminated. We were doing 3 to 1 lotion to breast milk and it didnt make the lotion too runny.
He grew out of it around the 1yr mark and hasnt had any issues since.
But every kid is different and definitely talk with the doctor before trying anything that could potentially hurt his skin

Are y’all sure it’s not herpes?

My boy is 9 months and his settled down around 6 months with a few minor flashes of it here and there but nothing like the first 6 months.he had it bad on his head and legs.
Why worked best for us was the Hydrocortisone and our Dr had us lathering him 3 times daily with Cytephel cream. So much he was like a fish to hold. It helped for sure but he eventually has “grown” out of it I think... the hydrocortisone is needed every so often now but I promise it will get better for you. It’s tough to watch as a parent.
We’d wake up and find blood spots in his crib from him scratching so much and scabs in his head.
Also, another piece of advice given to us was only room tempature water for baths and no longer than 5 minutes. The warm water opens the pours which helps intensify eczema.

Research Candida. It can be a factor topically. Also GI bioflora imbalances, too much Candida, can be a factor in chronic skin conditions.
And oral antibiotics can lead to GI imbalances.
Think of it as a yeast infection with internal and external components.
Adjust diet. Avoid sugar and processed foods

If it’s just on his cheeks and nowhere else, maybe pay attention to what his face is resting on. Do you wash your clothes with anything different from his clothes? If so, use a gentle detergent on your clothes as well, as well as all of his bedding. I had to switch my body soap as well to a mild baby soap while breastfeeding my second child since my soap was making her face raw just from contact while feeding.

Have to use moisturizers such as Eucerin Original moisturizing cream or Aquaphor and use it often (several times a day). Nothing works better than keeping them “greased up like a pig.”
Also put it on right after taking bath.
The topical steroids are important too but they will probably use mainly low strength on face of 5 month old. Eventually they will probably give you a stronger steroid , at least for short periods of time.
Continue to follow up with the Pediatric Dermatologist. Atopic Dermatitis isn’t something that will be cured with just one visit. Dr will need to follow the kid and adjust treatment as necessary.
