James Madison High School, a public school of about 1,600 students in Houston, notified families this month of a sweeping policy that banned revealing and sagging clothing for all people visiting the school, as well as pajamas, hair rollers and satin caps and bonnets

quote:

“You are your child’s first teacher,” the principal, Carlotta Outley Brown, wrote in a letter dated April 9 that asked adults to set an example by wearing appropriate attire on campus and helping support the school’s high standards. “We are preparing your child for a prosperous future,” she added. “We want them to know what is appropriate and what is not appropriate for any setting they may be in.”

quote:

The letter came a day after a local television station reported that a mother said she had been turned away from enrolling her daughter at the school because the mother was wearing a short dress and a head scarf. The policy has since ricocheted across Houston and beyond, with many calling it another example of how policies on personal appearance can enforce racist and classist power structures.

NY Times

The best part is that everyone is claiming that this is a racist policy yet the person who called for the the dress code, the principle, is black as well.

Do kids even sag their pants anymore. The urban youth I see wear skinny jeans and short shorts (chubbies style) now that are pulled up to their waist.

Louisiana public high schools could use this policy.

Good parents need a fricking dress code... I had a woman show up for a parent-teacher conference in a white wife beater, black bra, and those PINK shorts that showed her arse. The issue was she was pushing 250 easy and was an obvious meth head

She must be doing the meth wrong. You're not supposed to eat it.

It's absurd that this even has to be a policy.

She sounds like she is trying to be a great influence to the children at her school.

I saw this story.

That's good. Half the parents need to be educated themselves.

And how hard is it to dress presentable?

Critics say the dress code prohibiting pajama pants on school property unfairly targets those who don't have their shite together.

Good on the principal. Unfortunately, we live in an, “ I can do whatever I want,” type of world. This rule probably won’t stick.

I support this 100%

Why are people mad because someone came to the school dressed as a prostitute...

If they ban yoga pants at my kid's school I'm going to riot in the streets.
