When I was young, chunk was synonymous with throw.
—I chunked it in the trash
—He chunked that ball pretty far
—They chunked him in the clay (buried him)
Is that a redneck thing? Anybody still say that?

I chunk my 8 iron more often than I'd like.

We use daily chucked as a verb meaning to throw.
I Chucked a rock at the tree.

Was for me too. Later in life I learned it’s “chuck.”
Likewise, I was shocked to find out that teachers elsewhere don’t teach that you pronounce “pen” the same as “pin.”

I'm familiar with "chuck", and still use it occasionally. Never heard someone use "chunk" in the way you're describing.

We were chunking for tuna at the Petronius rig and hooked up some huge yellow fins.

I think that is the answer. I looked it up, and that is a recognized meaning of “chuck.” We sure enough said “chunk” though.

When I was a teenager, it blew my mind when I found out that "Chester Drawer" was actually a "Chest of Drawers."

Chunking is performing coitus with a big girl. For example, Walt chunked that Zeta at Reggie’s last night.

It's a bastardization of the word "chuck".
