Would appreciate the board's recommendations on a backup CC handgun

Looking for a physically smaller handgun to CC in an ankle or calf holster. Must have external safety. Never owned a .380, but I'm not totally averse to the idea. Would prefer a 9 mm, though, with a budget up to $500.00. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
ETA: I will personally look at and "feel" any that the board recommends.

Sig P938. Will be tough to find one for $500, but it can be done.

I am a very big fan of the Ruger LC9s & EC9s
You can get them for ~$250-300
ETA: make sure it's the s version. It's an upgraded striker fired gun with a great trigger.

Have a little Ruger EC9 and love it.

You'll be hard pressed to find it for 500, but this is my SIG P238 with extended 7RD magazine. It's backup to my 1911UC in .45. You won't regret spending the extra money on SIG, whether you go with the 238 or the 938. The pinnacle of reliability.

I love my Sig P365
I've got a 320 X Carry headed to my FFL. Hopefully it will be in today.

M&P Shield 2.0 9mm is perfect size for carry and it’s in your budget.

You will love the X Carry. I actually ended up with 2 of them. I bought one about 2 months ago then I get a Cabelas flyer in the mail and they had an X Carry with a Sig Romeo1 for $650. I couldn't pass up the deal and bought one of those as well.

Because I'm just not comfortable without one. I'm old and set in my ways.

I do like the looks of that P238. Got to see how it feels in my hand.

I absolutely love my X carry. I prefer to shoot it at the range over my P226 and M11-A1. Next gun will be the X-Five. I hear it’s a flat out shooter!

I heard the Sig P365 will be coming out with a thumb safety version.

yep. I got one about a year and a half ago, and have been shooting it in some competitions. The X Five is an awesome pistol, I have zero complaints about it.

The 938 is only slightly larger and gives you 9mm vs 380.

Exactly what I did but thru BassPro. Nobody local would/could match it.

This is always such a lazy excuse for not wanting to try/do something.
