Why is Shreveport dying?

Yes, it is a rhetorical question. I have grown up in this city and I have lived here for most of my life. It seems as though this town had always been on the cusp of growth and innovation but never quite made it. It began to die in the early 90’s ( or perhaps earlier) now it seems as though it is a mixture of old money and ghetto with nothing in between. How did that happen? I think in the past, politicians may have made some very poor decisions and Shreveport bore the consequences. Our education system also seems to be at the forefront (“The Magnet Cabal” is another topic for a later discussion). Does anyone have some insight as to how this happened?

GM moving in, GM moving out. Both fricked up everything. Leave it at that.

Shreveport started dying in the mid 70's. Downtown used to be pretty cool, even as late as the mid 80's. The Square was fun as hell in the early 80's.

LOL. There is a lot more to it than that.

The magnet programs are the only reason I support leaving some of those schools open.
Shreveport lacks identity. They lost out on some big companies coming to town in the 90’s and others left. It wants to be like Dallas one day and New Orleans the next. It’s always been a shithole.

Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Kirby Smith felt continued resistance was pointless.

Ghetto governance, crime, etc
Very few cities survive that unless they have a strong economy like an Atlanta

This thread is depressing.
Why are you of the opinion that Shreveport is "dying"? It's an important city for this state. It's hard for me to believe that it's dying, but, then again, I don't live there.
Is the demo of the city becoming older and poorer faster than young people are making careers and lives there? If so, I can understand your point.

I don’t know maybe I see the magnet programs is not providing an equal education to everyone. Sorry. It always looked very fishy to me that it was some sort of back door or compromise for wealthy people to send their children to public school. Must be for the education in the magnet schools and leave everybody else out to dry. Where is Bossier, on the other hand, has stellar school performance in all school programs. Why is Bossier different??

The same reason every state bordering California are the fastest growing populations in the US.

Blame the voters and their choice of politicians. Louisiana is the perfect example of anti-business politics. And it looks like you will get 4 more years of that under JBE.
Meanwhile people are moving across the state line for jobs in Texas, wither better schools, lower taxes, higher quality of life and lower cost of living.
It does take a rocket surgeon to figure out what’s wrong when you compare those two states.

It’s very depressing. It’s a very different town then the place I grew up in. The thing is, it never should have become this.

Religion and brain drain

Oh I absolutely agree with you. Maybe I am preaching to the choir. But I thought it would be fun just to see what peoples opinions were. As you’ll see in my post above, there is a disparity in the progression of Shreveport versus Bossier city; not only in education but several other issues.

You think there is more religion than in the past? Your bigotry is showing.
