I'd ask the author of the article exactly what was China's "trade" policy 200 years ago. We were only doing what other countries were doing. After all, that's how wars get started so I'd say all countries were somewhat guilty 200 years ago with their ways of doing trade.

Would that author justify the rampant slavery in sub-Saharan Africa because 160 or so years ago the US did it and therefore the US shouldn't opine on slavery?

What were the IP protections recognized 200 years ago? Patents in the US started in 1790 so from a US perspective they were in a very nascent stage.

China is trying to regain what it sees as its rightful place as the worlds largest economy which throughout most of modern history has been the case. The problem is the times China has been in the lead they were not communists.
