Which one do you encourage him to go to and why?

Rice. Much better school than the other two.

SMU

Can’t go wrong with any of one them. What is his/her major and how are those respective schools in that discipline? Whichever school is the better of the three in that area of study is the one I suggest. Ultimately it’s the kid’s decision.

Whichever is cheapest after scholarship offers.

They are all great schools. Stay out of it and let them decide. They are not going to listen to you anyway.

Definitely not SMU out of those options

Mine applied to Rice and Tulane and got accepted to both. She is going to Alabama because they offered the better scholarship package.

Gonna be flying a bunch: HOU, MSY, & DAL.
Pile up the SWA miles.
That’s ~$200k per year in tuition.

SMU
I'm down the road, so you can count on me to show her around.

How much financial backing does he have from family?
Will he have scholarships?
I mean...all three are great schools. Does he want to live in Texas? Does he want to stay close to family? Which school has the best program that aligns with his future interests?
Just a quick look at Rice's website says it's about $70k/year to go there (tuition plus fees and books and room/board, etc). Tulane says $74k. SMU is around $70k.
I mean, Jesus Christ. I pray he has some financial backing here.

Whoa:
Rice Helps With Tuition
quote:
But all hope is not lost. Rice University , one of the nation’s top 20 universities , has announced that it will now offer free tuition for students from middle-income families. The Rice Investment program will offer students with family incomes between $65,000 and $130,000 full tuition scholarships.
Moreover, students with family incomes between $130,000 and $200,000 will receive half-scholarships covering 50 percent or more of their tuition. If the family makes below $65,000, not only will the student get a full-tuition scholarship, but they won’t have to pay any fees, with room and board covered.
