Started a thread about not understanding why parents put their kids in travel ball...has a kid in travel ball. WTF? If your daughter gets a soccer scholarship this thread will come full circle. Bump if so.

The parent would be better off sticking that money in a high yield savings account

I pile on travel ball because:
1) it's the epitome of the middle class suburban trashiness/cheesiness that is fun as hell to make fun of (see Middle Class Fancy)
2) IRL I've seen it make people completely miserable. Plus trucking your kids around the region and spending way more money than you should so that perhaps one of them gets a scholly to Southeastern Technical State College to play baseball just seems shortsighted.

What do we mean by "live through them"
From what I've seen it has little to do with enjoying a sport you liked through your kid's life, but instead having something to throw in the face of Mike down the street who just got a better boat but his kid is in the band.

He thought she had a chance the first few years. By the time it was clear she wasn't scholarship material it had taken on a life of its own.

I don’t have kids but my feeling is: if your kid can play, they can play. I sure as hell aren’t hiring personal trainers and flying them across the country for camps

Well that's pretty stupid paying that kind of money on travel ball in hopes of a scholarship, when baseball or softball only give partial scholarships.

To each their own, but I don't see how spending hours and hours watching your kid stand on a field is that great. We spent a lot of time with our kids outdoors, camping, hiking, biking, scuba diving traveling to interesting places where being actually together and talking to each other.

My kids were non-athletes that excelled in academics, now have great careers with excellent incomes instead of having to sell cars for a living like the ex-college baseball players with a degree in PE.

Your right, it's not for everyone and some kids just don't have the God-given talents. There's no shame in that, but there are lessons we can teach kids that some SJW teacher will never be able to offer in the classroom - comroddery, discipline, etc.
Now as it relates to cost, yes it costs money but I always tell parents it's not about whether or not you can afford it... everyone can afford it. It's about whether or not you want to make the sacrifice for your kids to be set up to be successful.
