The bottom line for the holistic admissions policy is more tuition fees.

Instead of kids with 2.5 GPAs and 20,21 and 22s on their ACT going to Southeastern, UL and Southern Miss, LSU can get the tuition of selected kids from this group.

I seriously doubt any of these waivers granted by LSU are on the basis of an essay.

in an attempt to get more students and make more money off of lesser quality students, the new admission policy for students that don't meet the objective criteria(act and gpa), a more subjective criteria including an essay will be used to determine acceptance

The real problem is that LSU loses many of the best kids every year to Alabama, Auburn , Arkansas, Ole Miss, Georgia every year—-and I am not talking about football. Instead of offering big scholarship money to local kids who make 30-34 on the ACT , LSU essentially lets TOPS pick up the tuition and the kid pays the rest or most of the rest. Meanwhile, the above schools come here and recruit the same kid , offer to waive out of state tuition and then provide a scholarship offer that results in a parent paying less to send their kid to one of these schools instead of LSU. LSU issues it’s foundation money to lure mediocre (much lower ACT scores) out of state kids to come to school here. Meanwhile they also lower entrance standards that water down the quality of student that comes to LSU. It’s baffling to say the least.

Read the articles.
I do not assert anything about waivers, only the discussions about the policies in place, or about-to-be in place.

I do not offer commentary on their effectiveness, only that they exist, and their adoption is controversial.
