Exactly. I don’t understand why Repulbicans continue to constantly step on their own dicks in a race to be “principled” at the cost of not getting anything accomplished.
The Dems will do whatever the want next time in power (and media will carry their water). Republicans like Rand and others will complain about the “abuse of power”. But that’s it. It’ll just be words, even if he is right. Dems will force their legislation through and get whatever policies they want. This is how they win.

Thank you for hanging a lantern on the fact that "conservatives" no longer stand for any principles whatsoever.
"Win at any cost."
That is a "principle" ... sort of.

Posts like this are going to age so well the next time Dems are in power and you bitch about something they do

To be fair, there hasn’t been insane partisan votes against something solely because “orange man bad” before, either. Republicans are never lock step enough to block something like the Dems just pulled.

This seems to be the sentiment of most former conservatives in this thread.

I'm sorry to hear that facts are now lame to the "conservatives" on this board.
Can you list the facts you claim you presented?
Thanks.

Do you have an exact definition of what it was created for? Did Obama not declare at least two emergency declarations regarding the crisis at the border? How is what Trump done so vastly different than those before him?
Honest question. Maybe I'm confused, but I don't see that his declaration is any better/worse than the previous ones. Is it because he's gonna build a better barrier than is what already in place in many areas? Or just cause "Orange man bad!!!!"?

I just want results. Republicans are terrible at this. Dems are not.
Trump won. Get results.
Enforcing a fricking border is the one thing fed gov should fricking do. I’ve been to Israel in person and seen their wall and border security. I’ve visited other counties and talked to others who are in shock when they learn that in the US you automatically get citizenship just for being born on US soil. It’s all absurd and it’s ridiculous we as taxpayers continue to allow it and pay for it.
And you continue to prove my point. Sure, I’d bitch. But the Dems will enact their policy. Republicans get Dems and other Republicans to bitch, and then back down and don’t get anything.

No. Rand understands the precedent of using EO's to get what you want when it can't get passed through the normal channels the constitution provides is one hell of a slippery slope.
Didn't Congress give the president the authority to issue emergency declarations such as this?

I would love to know his rationale.

I have principles and ideals, but there are times that I will abandon those if the need arises. I'll be on the level with you so long as you are with me. That's my principle. You go low? I go lower. I won't cross that line first. But once you do, all bets are off. Just like a fight. I'll try to avoid it and walk away if need be. But if I'm cornered and fighting is my only option, I have no rules.

This is what leads to authoritarianism.
we all want results, but we all want to be on the same playing field and stay within the rules.
If not, the slippery slope becomes very real.

Why did he have to declare a national emergency?
It would appear to get military help to speed up the process.

How Congress and President Obama Made Trump’s Wall Possible
quote:
Throughout the 2016 election, Donald Trump campaigned for president on the promise that he would build a wall along the southern border. Six weeks after his election in November 2016, Congress overwhelmingly passed a statute—codified as 10 U.S.C § 284—that authorized the secretary of defense to support the “construction of roads and fences and installation of lighting to block drug smuggling corridors across international boundaries of the United States.” On Dec. 23, 2016, a month before leaving office, President Obama signed the 973-page bill into law without any objection to this provision.
It's a misconception here that he used a single NE in order to get funds. He did not. He took 3 separate actions.
quote:
Specifically, the president identified up to $2.5 billion under the Department of Defense funds that were designated for counterdrug activities. This provision does not turn on the declaration of a national emergency pursuant to 10 U.S.C. § 2808, which the president also invoked in a proclamation issued the same day.
Posted on 3/3/19 at 1:35 pm to RogerTheShrubber
But the slope is already there. It’s not a slippery slope because the Dems will go down the road when they need it regardless

All this is for show, doesn’t matter in the slightest. It will be decided in the SC.
Rand lost some points with many today and gained little. Do your job (they don’t), stand with the President, or get the frick out of the way.

Pathetic legislation passed which Trump is circumventing.
Rand's point is Congress is within its right to pass awful legislation.
POTUS is within his right to veto.
However, the NEA allows exactly what Trump is doing.
There is not much question about it.

I want to have principled republican leadership because I have a feeling that they can be a good example to the Dems. I am quite certain that the Dems leaders will then adopt the same type of leadership and integrity. We just have to keep being patient and wait for our principled leadership to rub off on theirs. It could happen soon. Let’s stay the course.
