So how do you feel about instrumental music?

I enjoy it but mainly as background music. It's the songs with meaningful lyrics that grab me

You need to listen to some Mogwai then:

But you reference Walk All Over You in another context? Those guys never wrote a single meaningful lyric.

Not picking. I’m just saying that when the music and the lyrics hit together it’s magical, but there are lots of great songs with crappy lyrics.

I love music but the lyrics are secondary to me.

My brain only really picks up the singer as an instrument.

I’ve tried to really pay attention to what’s being said but my brain just listens to the different instruments and beats, I could really care less as to what’s being said.

Anyone else like this?

I'm the same way. Have to be more mindful now that I have kids though.

Dawned on me one day I never really paid attention to any songs I listen to, in terms of the words or what they mean.

I understand your point, but I can’t say I’m 100% in that direction.

Well, context means a lot, don't you think? Might look back at the context of that post.

I think hair metal is a good example. It was good party music, chick loved it but the shallow lyrics grew tiresome. I felt much better when the introspective lyrics of the early 90s came around.

There is good, fun party music but it's mainly background noise or driving music for me

Where it gets muddy for me is when the music is great, the song is well written, but I just don't agree with the message. Some of Jason Isbell and Drive By Truckers fit that category. Lots of layers to that onion I guess...

I agree. There's a few songs/artists that turn me off lyrically. It makes it difficult to listen to

No, song meaning is the single most important aspect of music to me, it’s why Kris Kristofferson is my all time favorite despite being a below average singer.

Also two of my favorite songs ever are Reflections of My Life and Alone Again Naturally because they so perfectly capture the loneliness and constant regret I feel.

I do. Part of the reason I enjoy music so much.

Also, if I like a song enough to want to learn to play it, sometimes understanding the meaning of the song helps to figure it out.

“And the Hooooook brings you baaaaccckkk”

“It doesn’t matter what I say, as long as I sing w inflection”

Blues traveler wrote a song ab this very subject.

Also I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers but most of their lyrics are absolute nonsense. It’s the music and the sound which makes them great.

I’m so much like this. Drives me crazy. And like you said I’ll even make a conscious effort to tell myself to pay attention to the lyrics, but more often than not it all blends together. Describing the voice as just another instrument is the perfect way to describe it. Most of the time I have to look up the lyrics.

However, I definitely care about lyrics and meaning. I’m just really bad at making out what is being sung unless I can see a mouth moving in a video.

Sure. And this is a discussion, not an “OT call someone out” and pick things apart deal.

Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting has great lyrics but when it came out people weren’t cranking it on car radios because of the lyrics because you couldn’t understand half of them.

I think "Sunday Morning Coming Down" is a perfect example of how lyrics can make a song. I really don't care for the melody, It would be an ordinary song otherwise, and the tempo is too fast to reflect the character of the song IMO. However, the lyrics are soul binding and thoroughly introspective.

At the other end of the spectrum I dig a few Judas Priest songs that I don't care for the lyrics, but they have killer riffs.

The melody, tempo and lyrics together are what make a song a masterpiece IMO, "Time" by PF for example

Also, listen to "Driver 8" by REM and then listen to the Hootie version and how the tempo change seems to change the character of the song.

Depends on the type of song, and how it was treated in production.
If it was meant to just be something with a groove and a catchy rhyme, then I don't care about writing. On the other hand, if it is produced in a way, that sounds all serious and deep, then it should be well written and make some kind of sense.

Hmm. Nicely stated.
