My son recently got into watching the Nashville Predators and wanted to play hockey at the local level. He just turned 13 and I have no idea if there are any youth programs in near BR. His favorite player is PK Subban and hopes one day to rep the state of Louisiana. Any hockey dads out there willing to give some advice?

You’re already behind about 20,000 hours of the 10,000 hour rule. However, good luck

Get ready to spend a frick ton of money and time traveling. One of my best friends growing up played in Lafayette. The home games weren’t bad... the away games? Well.... they were definitely away. Far away.

Hockey used to be much more popular in SELA when we had all of the ECHL minor league teams scattered about. I know Lafayette still has a team and local hockey. Not sure about anywhere else.

Was there not an LSU hockey club team just a few years ago? Search TD, I could swear that I read it here.

Baton Rouge had a junior league and we would travel down from NWLA to play. Junior Mudbugs up here so great job with the youth and the Dallas Stars do a lot for them. Both my boys played until recently. As already stated....it gets expensive quick.

Not the point, people playing at LSU should know the local programs or locations, right?

If you are serious it may actually make more sense to move. Kinda tough if he just wants to try it though.

There’s a Facebook page for Louisiana Hockey. Baton Rouge had leagues until 2018 when Leo’s shut down for good. Lafayette has some and Shreveport has more. BREC wants to build a hockey and indoor football field facility in BR in the next few years. Practice street hockey for now and teach them to skate wherever you can find a spot.

I can't speak for Louisiana local...but I know there's a big following of hockey here in Huntsville, Al. HAHA (no joke...it's called HAHA (Huntsville Amateur Hockey Assoc) has a huge youth program. You might see if they have a site and see if they could have contacts in La.
