MEMPHIS, Tenn.- Some kids spend their time on social media, other kids spend their time playing video games. When it comes to 14-year-old Jackson Oswalt, his time is spent in a laboratory working on a nuclear fusion reactor.
The Memphis teen finished his reactor and achieved fusion at the age of 13. He’s regarded by experts as the youngest in America – maybe even the world – to accomplish it. Jackson built a steel machine made up of vacuums, pumps and chambers that is capable of smashing atoms together through force in a smoking hot plasma center that releases a burst of fusion energy. If you’ve ever wondered how the sun and other stars are powered, the process within Jackson’s nuclear fusion reactor is comparable.

Jackson’s father, Chris Oswalt, had no real understanding of what his son was working on. To make sure Jackson was safe he had experts speak to him about the dangers involved with working on a potentially deadly fusion reactor, like being exposed to high levels of radiation or being electrocuted by the 50,000 volts of electricity he uses to warm the fusion reactor’s plasma core.
Outside of his safety concerns, Chris Oswalt was astonished at what his son was attempting to do.
“Being a parent of someone that was as driven as he was for 12 months was really impressive to see. I mean it was everyday grinding; Everyday learning something different; everyday failing and watching him work through all those things,” he said.

Color me just a bit skeptical that two teenagers were able to accomplish what thousands of scientists have been trying to do for decades.
I hope it's true, but, uh, I have my doubts.

But can he cut the grass in a straight line?

Fusion? I’m no physicist, but I think that’s a big deal.
ETA: Hell, it’s a big deal either way. I was still learning the finer points of beating my meat when I was that age.

At 14, I spent less time working on nuclear fusion reactors and more time jerking off.

That kid goes to my high school

Have an up-vote. Hopefully we're able to figure out how to sustain a fusion reaction before he has a 12 year old of his own.

Fusion reactors have been around for awhile. You can even buy them. The key is getting one that is efficient with more than 100% efficiency the goal. They are building one now in France that when completed should do just that.

You a Zoroastrian, baw?
I don't think a nuclear fusion reactor is considered an eternal flame.

Kid will have us time traveling by the time he is 25

Ahhh, I see. I misunderstood.

Skunk Works recently filed a patent for a "miniature" nuclear fusion reactor. If they're successful this will be a major game changer for space travel.

Almost.
It’s not (greater than 100% efficiency). That’s physically impossible.
It’s simply that we’ve use up more energy containing the reaction than the reaction releases.
So we are trying to get more than 0% efficiency.

The "clean" energy issue would be completely resolved if you could harness power exerted by every red blooded american males in their effort to tame the beast.
