Beerjeep is somebody who read a bunch of memes about Abe and formulated his thesis on him as the great racist. When in actuality he was much in line with all whites at the time. Not in any way an overt racist but a man who viewed blacks in much the same way a lot of intellectuals did at the time. Reading an actuql book without pictures would do him some good. But beerjeep has his memes with quotes next to pictures of Abe so that is all he needs. What a queer.

Yours is a simplistic and skewed interpretation of Lincoln’s plan for colonization of slaves either back to Africa or elsewhere on a voluntary basis. Though the plan was not well received by a black delegation he met with, he felt it had merit. Given the lack of acceptance among blacks for the proposal, he adjusted and issued his EP, effectively adjusting course.
He was always an abolitionist and advocate against slavery, he just had a poor initial plan. That’s the nuance you intentionally eliminate to bend the narrative. Like much of the argument here, yours is advanced in a one-sided manner to support your position, which cannot be maintained if history is provided in full.

Exactly. Chernow’s biography on Grant (which was fantastic) paints a far different picture of Lincoln than what is being claimed here.

Idk you tell me.
So you don't know why the southern states seceded?
And you expect me to read all this shite...?
quote:
Maybe you can tell me why the north didn’t free their own slaves while you’re at it That doesn’t mean the north fought to end slavery. They didn’t at all, they fought to preserve the union. Had the north fought to end slavery, the north would have freed their own slaves at the onset of the war. The emancipation proclamation would have affected and freed the slaves in the north had he thought slavery was wrong.

No, I’ve taken plenty of history classes and read close to 50 books on the civil war.

Never said he wasn’t. I said he was a racist. The majority of the whites at that time were.

No, he was an outright racist. But that was standard then.

Reading an ACTUAL book might help you in your spelling.

Once again, I’ve read countless books on the civil war. Would you like to discuss the civil war? I’d be more than happy to.

Of course I do.

What’s wrong? Can’t refute facts?
Are you saying the north didn’t have slaves during the civil war? Are you saying the emancipation proclamation freed slaves?
Are you saying the north fought the south to end slavery all the while permitting slavery in northern states the entire war?
Odd position to take

Sorry, but his removal of Habeas Corpus knocks him down a couple of rungs for me.

Then why did you say you didn't?
Why was South Carolina so scared of Lincoln that they left the Union before he took power?

There’s this magical thing called sarcasm.
quote:

A mix between issues with the fugitive slave act, a belief that the north was taking advantage of the south’s economy, issues with states rights (in terms of new states chosing to allow slavery or not), and an irrational fear of change.
Now, why did the north fight the south? Was it to end slavery or was it to preserve the union?
If you believe the north fought to end slavery, why would they continue to allow slavery in the north? Why didn’t the emancipation proclamation affect slaves in the north?

To preserve the union. I've never said otherwise.
Lincoln was elected to free the slaves. That's why So. Carolina left. The North had had enough of southerners coming into their states and dragging people away. Lincoln was the Abolitionists candidate.

No he wasn’t.

The north got tired of following the laws they agreed to.

Just because the abolitionist supported him didn’t make him an abolitionist.
Then why didn’t he abolish slavery in the north? Why didn’t he free the slaves in the north when he gave the emancipation proclamation?
Bueller?

None of what you’ve said matters. He freed more than 3million Americans. It’s the single greatest thing any American has ever done. It just doesn’t matter that some ideas and opinions he had would be seen as inappropriate today.

Are Democrats still trying to pretend that abe was really a Democrat?

Schrodinger’s Lincoln.
Do Republicans want to not be racist? Party of Lincoln! Do they feel bad that they got their arse whipped in the Civil War? Lincoln was a racist! Democrats venerate Lincoln? He was a tyrant!
