Two Girls One Cup comes to mind.

Artistically brilliant but the plot is flawed.

TLJ
Black Panther

Occasionally, I'll bring Blade Runner 2049 into the top three for the hell of it.

A good portion of Black Panther complaints come from users who admittedly didn't see the film and have no idea what it's about.

The controversy comes because some people view film as an art, some view it as entertainment, some view it as a medium for social change/commentary.

Personally, I get annoyed when films are written and directed in a way where they repeatedly hit you over the head with SJW or white guilt stuff. I don’t watch movies to feel bad about myself.

The board ethos is so strong that the only "hated" movies that get talked about are universally hated.

If I had to guess some that would be 50/50ish: Juno, for sure. Scott Pilgrim vs The World had a sizable crowd that just didnt "get it". Anything by Woody Allen or Terrence Malik.

Solo might apply here. Most people who've seen it generally acknowledge it was okay for a popcorn flick.

Most of those same people also refused to see it in the theater as a boycott of Disney Star Wars.

If the question is a mix of hate/love then TLJ isn't even close to being in the running. Other then a few folks, who I suspect are engaging in some lazy trolling, that film is loathed on here.

Saying TLJ sucks on here is about as controversial as saying puppies are cute and its enjoyable to have oral sex performed on you. You are preaching to the choir.

Short term, as others have pointed out, anything that can get caught up in "identity politics" is likely to be very controversial. "This movie is promoting the gay, liberal, anti-white, and pro-cat ownership agenda!"

Then you will have the film's defenders, who've usually actually watched the movie, saying something like "Err... its a movie about a giant alligator living the New York sewers and the lead character just happens to have a pet cat."

Before conservative snowflakes get upset by that, I can assure you that on a forum that leans liberal, the liberal snowflakes have nearly identical melts over movies in the other direction. Bottom line, people who are looking to be offended by something will find a reason.

Other then that you will have a few movies and TV shows that come down to personal preference. Some folks on here, as an example, don't like the current season of True Detective because they think it is too slow developing. Others love the slow build up of tension and character development.

upon it's release and winning Best Picture, No Country for Old Men split the board. Love it or hate it.

I feel No Blood For Oil is the same too.

Since I’ve been reading this board (10+ years) the biggest love/hate slugfest I’ve seen over a movie is Prometheus. Lots of strong opinions on that one. TLJ is overwhelmingly hated on this board. Black Panther I feel is considered an average Marvel movie by most and the only controversy is arguing over the political message.

Everyone always forgets the "discussion" Prometheus stirred when this topic comes up.
