Grilled Okra

I’ve heard people praising grilled okra. Bought some whole okra today. How do you do it and for how long?

You came to the right place. I grill tons of it every summer.
Sprinkle the pods with a bit of olive oil and simply season with some salt, pepper and a bit of garlic powder. This is the blend I use but you can use whatever suits your taste. Get the grill hot first before oil and seasoning since the okra will absorb the olive oil a good bit.
Grill like any other vegetable. I like mine with grill marks and you want to take them off just before they start to split along the ribs. I grill on medium/high and it takes about 10 minutes to finish for my taste.
They will be soft and have a great grilled flavor and not really slimy like okra gets in a pot.

Toss with evoo, salt and pepper and grill over medium heat.

Forgot to ask. Just how much are the robber barons charging for okra in the markets in your area. I'm in N.O. and they are $3.99 a lb. at the local Rouses and Winn-Dixie stores.
Outrageous price for okra since it really doesn't come down during the summer months when in full production. I pick a couple pounds of it a day for almost 3 months every summer.

It's delicious with tzatziki.

Yep. $3.99 a pound at Publix in Nashville.

Okra is completely and utterly out of season right now; of course it’s expensive. It’s cheap as hell in July/August at any farmer’s market. Would you expect peaches to be cheap and delicious in February? It’s cauliflower/kale/broccoli/cabbage/mustard greens season.....most emphatically not okra season.

I grow it every summer, so I know when it is, and isn't in season. Even in the summer months, it is priced at $3.99 a lb. at the local supermarkets, which, like I said, is ridiculous for something that grows so easily, profusely and under less than ideal conditions as they are heat and drought tolerant.

This is a must.

I add salt and pepper after grilling.

This. Also, I use a grill basket. I find it easier than trying to roll them around like hotdogs.

Cops use okra to entice rednecks out of the swamp, otherwise there is no legitimate use for this atrocity of a mistake for a vegetable.

I have nothing to add except you can’t fix okra a way that I don’t like it. Oh, and anyone who doesn’t like it is a communist.

Good idea. I've put them on skewers to make handling easier, but the basket sounds simpler.

I've done this too like making a raft. I line up similar size pieced and alternate pointy end/stem end with about 10 pods and run skewers through them near each end and it makes it easier to grill a bunch of it.
The good thing about okra is it will not fall through most grill grates like asparagus or grilled green beans if not skewered.

I do this, but I use some lemon pepper blend instead of salt/pepper. Gives it
a great summertime grill flavor.

Does roasting in the oven work with okra?

I can see where it would, but I like the grilling flavor you get with using a grill and cooking over direct flame.
One of the people I give okra to in the summer does put his in the oven and he loves it that way, but he lives in an apartment and has no grill.
