Tempe police have arrested a man suspected of stabbing a pregnant Lyft driver to death Sunday morning after he called for a ride.

Fabian Durazo, 20, was arrested Monday after he was spotted driving the victim's car on Interstate 10 near Quartzsite, Tempe police said.

He is being held in the stabbing death of Kristina Howato, 39, who was a working as a Lyft driver and had responded to a call for a ride from Durazo at around 1 a.m. on Sunday, police said.

The stabbing occurred in the 1700 block of East Eighth Street in Tempe, near McClintock and University drives. When the vehicle arrived at the address, Durazo began to stab Howato repeatedly while inside the SUV and continued the attack outside of the vehicle, police said.

Durazo then fled with the woman's 2005 Mercury SUV, which was equipped with GPS locating technology, according to Tempe police.

Responding police and paramedics found Howato with multiple stab wounds. She was in her third trimester of pregnancy. Howato and her unborn child both died, police said.

As crazy as the world is today, I'm somewhat shocked this doesn't happen more often. There are so many weird pieces of shite walking around each day, there is no way I could be a glorified taxi driver.

Someone else posted elsewhere that Lyft has a "no weapons" policy for their drivers, so they're defenseless against this shite. I'm fairly certain Uber also has the same policy because I remember it mentioned when the Uber driver got into the shootout on Canal in NOLA a couple years ago. Just setting their drivers up for trouble.

ETA: I'm not 100% certain on their weapons policy, as LNCHBOX stated.

I must have not gotten that memo. I always have at least one weapon on me, and always will.

ETA: Situations like this were always in my mind when I saw young girls working the French Quarter late at night. I would never want my wife or daughter putting themselves in that situation. The assholes are rare, but even the couple I've encountered were enough.

Why do you think cabs have that divider between the front and back seat?

AZ capital punishment includes "multiple homicides." At least it's not New York.

There was an Uber driver in BR that got a DUI with passengers in the vehicle.

Kind of defeats the whole point

If I ever were to have a wife no way I’d let her drive fricking strangers around.

That is really said. Article also says she has a 2 and 4 year old.

But, I do agree its odd we don't hear more stories like this. There are so many crazy people out there.

Same with AirBnb hosts that let people stay in a room in their home. I could never do that.

Good luck trying to get another Lyft, Fabian. Your rider ranking is now shite.

What a tragic story. Absolutely terrible.

I feel like the reason why we don't hear more stories like this is that it is extremely easy to track who is committing the crime. If you're looking to steal a car you would be much better off car jacking someone.

Last time I was in a Lyft the driver had a Glock 40 in a holster between his seat and the console. I remember thinking, "good for you bro" and just went on with my day.
