None. They are terrible. If you can't do gas, forget about it.

If electric is the only option, stay traditional

Don’t have any experience with electric but like some others say, do gas. We have propane and ours is absolutely awesome.

I've installed two 18kW units this month and they've worked just fine, one Rheem and the other an A.O. Smith. One was for a 1-bed rental house and the other was for a small restaurant kitchen replacing a pair of old electric 30-gallon units. The Rheem was $440 and the other was $530. I have no issue with them and they are often a good choice when dealing with space limitations and running gas is not an option. I've installed several small ones as POU boosters for bathrooms and laundry rooms.

I've had one in my home for 6 years and its been OK. I would say its been great but I undersized it and in the winter it doesn't supply me the hot water I could really use for a shower. Its one of the smallest they make at 11kw.

That said I am going to replace it with an electric tank water heater soon. Reason being I'm not a huge consumer of hot water so likely I will never run the tank out of heated water. Don't want to upgrade the electric panel to handle the size tankless I actually need.

If this is an entire house.....then yes, gas is the only way to go.

I have 2 smaller units in my home. I remodeled my master bath a couple years ago. I installed a small 13 kW heater (Rheem) for just my shower. I have endless hot water for the shower and it is awesome.

Last year I added entire bathroom upstairs, in a previous attic storage space. I installed the exact same unit for that shower and sink. Works like a champ.

If you are using it for a small point of use area, like I did, then you would be fine.

My condo and rental units all have traditional electric and I like them. The kitchen at work has a tankless electric "point of use" WH. It must be undersized because it only gets warm and most of us use hot water from the BUNN machine to wash our coffee mugs.

Make sure you get enough BTUs.

Do not do it. Only get tankless if you can get a gas one.
