It’s a good idea and would have saved a lot of lives on 9/11.

Yeah, I don't see a single issue arising with 500 of those coming out of a building at the same time.

I would take that chance instead of being trapped at the top of the World Trade Center on fire with no way of getting out.

and I can see almost everyone inflating that thing inside the building and not be able to get out, I see the incredibly dumb flying public way too often

I’ve thought for awhile it’s a real shame some random guy above the impact zone in either WTC building didn’t have a BASE jump parachute.

That's pretty fricking awesome. Not sure how well it would work en masse, but still neat.

I wonder how much the updraft caused by the fire would effect the fall.

I'm not sure it could have made it past the areas where flames that were pouring out of the windows, but I would have damn sure tried.

aerodynamically it looks wrong, guy in second half of that video didn't jump from very high, I think that thing would attain a high terminal velocity from a higher drop

ETA: shuttlecocks come down pretty fast, and that's the same airfoil

If I were in a highrise, I would keep a small parachute handy

I'd say it has a good chance of working on any structure at 20 stories or less.

Above that, the winds will probably flip that thing over. But maybe it still falls fairly slowly, so a broken bone or two instead of building death.

Invented in the early 1960s in New Orleans (as Space Walk), and still used worldwide today:
