They also thought that the harp and the flute would just not work on an actual screen for the audiences. The guitar was just a natural fit and in the short clip where they show it it does work.

So is Rand going to learn to play the guitar?

Well... this will SPOILERS for the show as it differs from the books, so if you don't want to know, don't read.

We pretty much know that Thom does not show up in Emond's Field. It appears he shows up later, maybe while Mat and Rand are on the Road. So its sort of unclear how long he is with them and if teaching them to play for supper is a part of the plot. We just don't know.

END SPOILERS

That is not a problem I have with the changes. It seems like a decent and fair change.

I think some of the other changes will have purists with their panties in a bunch, but nothing that I have heard so far fundamentally changes things.

I think if it is like that, it could miss some of Rand's coming of age, which I consider a big part of the storyline and it would complicate Matt's arc. But it could be done a different route with the same general story.

I dont think that will be as necessary here since they cant have as much of the quest, stay at small tavern stuff. But it is possible.

It is kind of pointless to focus on litle changes and if they will work or not. The story is going to be vastly different in a lot of ways.

But they appear to be doing everything right to try and make this a fantastic retelling in terms of budget, strong actors and solid director, production and costume / set people.

I dont want to get my hopes up but i think it is going to be really good, i just hope it is marketed well and that it catches on so we can see it to the end (and get more big budget fantasy productions)

Right. This is a 14 (15 if you include New Spring) book series where all of the books are 100s of pages long, some of them get to around 1000 pages.

There are hundreds of characters, many pretty important characters, subplots, etc.

It is not possible to do it all in a series. It just isn't, for a variety of practical reasons.

So subplots are going to be eliminated. Characters combined, famous scenes done away with, books condensed, etc.

It is inevitable, we already know of some fairly major changes for S1.

As long as they stay true the essence of the books and characters, its fine.

Think of it as another turning of the wheel.

I don't think I fully appreciated what a big star Alvaro Morte is in Spain and I guess Europe in general until I watched Money Heist. That show is a cultural phenom over there and he is a big big star.

In order to keep him, Logain's character will have to continuously get increasing screen time.

This is the sort of thing that may drive me bonkers. In order to accomodate an actor playing a relatively minor character, the show–makers are willing to abridge important character–developing swaths of the story in order to make room/money for parts of the story that were not even there in the original. This is Rand's story, and the world's, not Logain's

In the books, Logain seemed to be almost crammed in as an afterthought. I think he deserves more screen time. As a false dragon, he can be played off the real dragon if done right.

Long before Morte was cast, Rafe had said he thought Logain was the character that would likely have the most drastically increased role on the show, because he thought he was criminally underused in the books.

I do tend to agree and have always thought that, so I don't have an issue with it.

Logain is going to basically be main cast, so I guess I'd get used to it.

(He also said Faile would be among the most changed on the show, because he really dislikes the character in the books)

FB, FB: I believe I had seen that as well before any casting announcement.

To be clear, what would drive me bonkers would not be stroking an actor's ego, but rather using precious screen time and money on anything other than the original story (for whatever reason).

And don't get me started (again) on efforts to "modernize" the story with woke messaging and character reimagining.

I remain cautiously optimistic and I love this story so much that I am both willing to accept some bastardization if the spirit of the story remains intact and it is told beautifully, but also fiercely and possibly mildly irrationally protective of its original form

Well, from the spoilers I have seen, you are going to be disappointed. They spent a good chunk of time filming in Spain, and it wasn't for original story, I can tell you that.

The silver lining is that if Amazon messes this up, someone is likely going to be determined to do it, but better. It's a huge project. Hope they follow through.

Logain became really important moments in the latter half of the series and has some fantastic development and change. I find the guy who was tricked into thinking he was the chosen one to be fascinating and am excited to see him fully fleshed out.

I dont think rand and other emonds fielders, moraine, etc. Will have their character arcs cut short

Brandon Sanderson also completely screwed Logain up.

If they make it that far, I imagine Androl won't exist and Logain will get those scenes.

Also, I think it would be really impactful if the boys got to either see Logain get captured, or gentled. Seeing that on screen and them witnessing it would make things for Rand later on be much more impactful.

I really dont understand why people care so much about the race of the actors. Racw wasnt a big compenent of the story at all, so havent the emonds fielders be a diverse cast doesnt impact the spirit of the story in any way.

Ya i agree, i dont really blame sanderson given the task and how they limited his beta readers and how he had to split booke 12 and 13 after trying to write it as one. Overall i think he did a really good job with a really tough task.

Sanderson did a great job, honestly in some parts better than RJ did for a few books.

He really just did a poor job with two things:

Mat, which he admits and says he just could not get right or find the voice for, and it shows

and

Logain/Androl, which was completely unneccessary.

Race wasnt a big component of the story at all

I disagree with this. One of the biggest themes in Jordan's world was the interactions of the different nations and races. He went to great lengths to drive it home because it made it a more rich and realistic world.

That being said, embracing that world building and then smashing it up because of politics is silly.

It is hyper nationalistic but not really about race.

Some get conflated in areas such as the aeil but for the most part the nationalism is at the forefront. You dont see much racial conflict as compared to national rivalry
