ExxonMobil is withdrawing its pending 2017 Industrial Tax Exemption requests, which were recently rejected by the East Baton Rouge School Board and were scheduled to be voted on by the Metro Council Wednesday evening.

The company cites the “ongoing local uncertainty” surrounding the ITEP program in Baton Rouge as the reason for its withdrawal, according to an Exxon news release this afternoon.

“Due to the uncertainty, we will have to assume there is no ITEP incentive as we make cost projections on future investment opportunities in Louisiana,” states the release, penned by several local Exxon officials: Polyolefins Plant Manager Stephen Hamilton, Chemical Plant Manager Dave Luecke, Refinery Manager Gloria Moncada and Plastics Plant Manager Angela Zeringue.

ExxonMobil was seeking two property tax breaks worth approximately $2.9 million over 10 years—one for work at its Baton Rouge refinery and the other for its polyolefins plant. Work for both was completed in 2017.

Update 1/28

Baton Rouge area legislators drafting bill to return ITEP to state control

quote:

Two Republican state lawmakers plan to file legislation that would return sole authority of the Industrial Tax Exemption Program back to the state, essentially restoring the process in place before Gov. John Bel Edwards’ 2016 executive order gave local governments a say in granting the property tax exemptions.

TBR rejoices that these evil corporations aren't investing more in the area. Now we'll finally have Whole Foods in the ghetto!!!

The idiots on the council and TBR will trumpet this as a victory.

Anyone who reads between the lines should be very nervous.

TALK ABOUT BITING THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU.
I used to be so proud to be from Baton Rouge as I have lived here all of my life. With our elected officials we have become a banana republic. This city is imploding on itself. Such an embarrassment

Better do something about TBR quick or we'll be reading about the plant closure and resource consolidation in 10 years.

Sounds like they'll just move down river to a more favorable parish.

10 years?

A whole lot sooner than that, I’m sure. Zachary just got assfricked by 3 closures / consolidations within a week BEFORE this hit the fan.

It's too late at this point.

The taker population taken over the producer population. It's only a matter of time before BR buries itself.

Exxon wastes more than 2.9M in a day. I'm guessing this is just greasing the skids for decisions on various expansions and projects.

No doubt.

Are refineries tax exempt in the Houston area?

If they don’t continue to put improvements at the plant, it slowly becomes less viable compared to other facilities.

And just because they may keep the main plant itself open doesn’t mean they won’t shutter portions of it and send that work elsewhere.

That plant has a lot of brand new units in it. They wont scrap those so quickly. But it will make it a lot easier for them to choose shuttering units instead of expanding/maintaining them.

Especially when you consider the size of their facilities in Texas.
