Transplants, tell your culture shock stories when you first came to South LA

Everyone who didn’t grow up in south Louisiana but came down for college or whatever reason, experienced a little culture shock. I’m curious to hear yalls stories.
When I first came to LSU, I didn’t realize how big of a deal tailgating and the whole gameday experience was. The first time I had gumbo they brought out the bowl with separate bowls with rice & potato salad. That threw me off. A few years later, things like this are normal to me for sure. Some of the lingo took time to get used to as well.

At first I couldn’t believe how often Louisiana teams get bent over by the referees, but then it became a common occurrence.

I couldn’t believe how non-Southern it was in the sense of the traditional South

My first year at LSU was the fall after the 2003 national championship. The first gameday was insane to me.
I was lucky enough to get tickets in the student section and it blew my mind you could fit the population of my hometown at the time into Tiger stadium almost 3 times.
People who tailgate at home are contained to a little field, so seeing people all over campus setting up days before was so exciting.

Lucky. My first was a glorious 8-5 season. Still had a hell of a time though. My first magnolia bowl was pretty legit too.

I had a roommate from a lily white Cleveland suburb in college and his culture shock was all the black people everywhere. You should have seen his eyes when the third man in our apartment (who moved in a couple weeks later) turned out to be a black cowboy from Lake Charles. Blew his f$&king mind I used to f$&k with his racist yankee arse by taking him to these little hole-in-the-wall restaurants north or campus or off Plank Road just to freak him out. Dude was even uncomfortable around the cleaning lady.

From a small town. I had never seen girls drink so much. Thought Baton Rouge was a big city.

Not my story but of someone I know....
A friend of mine had an old college girlfriend (no pics) that he hadn't communicated with in years. The college they attended was not in Louisiana.
This girl was a huge liberal.
Several years out of college the girl decided to go to Charity to get a MS in Nursing. She moved in with my friend and started school.
Her experiences at Charity opened her eyes and she has different view of the world now.

This is funny and true. Being an east coaster, I can tell you that the SJW yankees are the most racist people. They have very little exposure to minorities, and they are the first to tut tut you for being racist southerners. Yet try to have a black person move into their neighborhood or integrate into their private schools and the masks come off lol.

An ex-gf (no pics) had moved down to NOLA from the NE (first mistake). Her two biggest culture shocks were the drive-through daiquiri shops and not having to finish her drink before leaving a bar. She says she destroyed many purses by trying to hide drinks in them after last call back home.
My biggest reverse culture shock is how hard it is to find hard liquor in other states. Seems I forget about this until I go on an LSU road-trip.

Drive thru daiquiri shops are access to hard liquor are definitely two big ones. We were in Arlington Texas for the Miami game in September and it was on a Sunday. We went to find liquor and realized they didn’t sell it on sundays in Texas.
We were very mad. We could have got it Saturday but chose to wait till gameday for some reason. Bad choice. It’s weird cause it’s only like that in south LA. You go north of I-10 and the blue laws are harder than damn near anywhere in the country.

We had some friends from California come down for a visit one time. They were completely blown away by the fact that alcohol can be purchased at Walmarts down here.

The amount of illiterates. I’m not saying that to be a dick. It was a huge shock for me how many kids in middle school (and sometimes older) couldn’t read and/or write.
