Traditionally Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas rank at the bottom

For years the common denominator was the extreme poverty along the Mississippi River. The other areas of these states had their problems, but nothing compared to the Mississippi delta.

The Delta is still a problem, but the cities like Jackson, Nola, BR, Shreveport, and Little Rock are now the biggest source of crime and corruption.

Tourism

Helps to have your state have the most coastline in the contiguous US, with over half of that having world class beaches and sand (Gulf side).

Not even Florida can frick that up.

The only thing that makes Louisiana better than Mississippi in any way is New Orleans, and a lot of people on this site like to shite on even that.

I'm surprised that the thread made it to post #13 before Mississippi was mentioned.

We must be doing something right!

It also requires more money to live in so it kind of cancels out. I can get a hell of a lot more with my money in the southeast than I can in California.

For example:
$600,000 home in Mississippi

$600,000 home in California

Yes, you are correct. A "starter" home in SoCal, near the coast, is going to run you 500-600k. No one said you have to live in THAT part of cali. Go to the Fresno area, or anywhere inland outside of touristy resort areas, and prices reflect much more similarly to other areas.

You also are not taking into consideration the higher pay in Cali. The below is just an example of a new employee fresh out of school.

For Example:
Student graduating with a 4 year acct degree in Louisiana:
$35,000-40,000

Student graduating with a 4 year acct degree in California:
$60,000-90,000

Look at Florida, Tennessee, and South Dakota all in the top 5 with no personal income tax.

The top 3 that come to mind are Louisiana, West Virgnia and maybe Florida.

Only 8 states lost residents last year and West Virginia lost 11K and Louisiana 10K. FL was one the largest gainers of population.

FL has a health economy and growing population. Louisiana and West Virginia economy is declining and people are leaving.

Louisiana lost 55,000 people as they moved out of state, but when you factor in new gains, births, etc..Louisiana lost 10K total.
