Why would my neighbor tap into my phone land line?

What benefit can they gain other than being able to make a phone call? I would hear them on the line if I picked up while they were on. I've never heard anything.

Are they able to use some sort of modem to get internet access or something like that? Two neighbors tapped into my business phone line. I found out today after the line began to have static yesterday.

I cut their cables and notified AT&T. The static is gone from my phone.

What benefit did they gain from having done what they did?

Thank you!

Call the police and have them ask your neighbors.

I notified AT&T and I have a PTZ camera zoomed in on the area. Maybe someone will go up there tonight to see why their "whatever" isn't working.

Had they done a good job with their splice, I wouldn't have known and they could have continued to be thieves.

Whatever you choose to be in life, you should be good at it. These people are not good at it because it caused static on my phone line.

Your neighbor figured you let Alexa or Facebook portal tap it so why not someone you know? You could help him get relevant info about you to help your friendship

My first thought is saving $20 a month on basic phone service used only for an alarm system?

I have two att boxes in my back yard.
We used to drop in on calls and prank people using other people's lines. Phones are incredibly easy to tap.
Worst we did, was when a friend died we used his old house number to call other friends and hang up on them.

In college in the 70s my friend and I would take a phone we had equipped with alligator clips on the cord, roam around campus until we found a unlocked "phone" closet. We would tap up and down the terminals to find a dial tone, then make long distance calls back home, long distance was expensive back then.
