DiNardo sealed his fate when he ran off Morris Watts and Carl Reese in successive years. Both those guys took lateral jobs

Im pretty sure they went to higher paying gigs. (Reese was poached by texas I think, and that was the beginning of the end for Dinardo). This was before LSU was willing to pay to keep coaches. If anything Gerry was too loyal to his assistants, similar to Les Miles.

Yea and the Reese loss hurt. We averaged 35pts a game with Tepper and finished 4-7.

I went to that game in Tuscaloosa. It was depressing. There was no real enthusiasm by Alabama fans before, during, or after the game - it was like they were showing up out of habit. Say what you will about losing 8 in a row, at least many LSU fans think we can win each year and show some enthusiasm. The Alabama fans’ reaction to a little adversity showed me a lot about their character.

Just look at their schedule, Alabama lost to Louisiana Tech the week before. I didn't know that happened.

LSU wasn't ranked #5 to start 1997. They were ranked #10. This is just some dude from the NYT making his own top 20.

LSU was ranked #9 going into 1998 and made it to #7 before their first game.

That just goes to show you how watered down bowl season has really become. In 1997 there were "only" 20 bowl games and many thought that was far too much. This year there were 40 games and the Independence Bowl had 8-4 Temple vs. 7-5 Duke (both unranked)

In 1997 a 7-4 Miss State was left at home with no bowl. This year a 6-6 Vandy made the Texas Bowl and 7-5 Auburn made the Music City Bowl. Hell Miss St with the same number of losses as 97 made the Outback Bowl in 2018.

Cecil went apeshit on Auburn and still lost.

The 94 game, Lynn Amadee should have had his arse kicked for allowing Jaime Howard to continue to throw the ball. That was the biggest debacle in LSU history other than the 2012 BCS.

The ‘95-‘97 seasons were a lot of fun.

We were good.

Went 10-2 in ‘96.

Some of the best players we have had came through LSU in those few seasons.

We beat Saban in ‘95.

1996 was a fun season, but there were two ugly losses: 26-0 shutout at home vs Bama, and a 13-56 shellacquing at Florida.

Still it was worth it, the way Herb Tyler played, that defense led by the great Carl Reese, and Kevin Faulk's heroics. I was really on the Dinardo train at the time.

Um, I’m guessing you didn’t watch LSU that year. Faneca didn’t play defense and Northern played for the Bills at that time.

Yes, LSU had a mini-resurgence from 95-97, which set the stage for Saban's run in the 2000s.

Unfortunately, Dinardo hired Lou Tepper and the resurgence didn't last because our defensive scheme and play calling was just atrocious. Regardless, a lot of Dinardo players were still around 2000-2001 and were integral to Saban's early success at LSU.

That team had a 13 Year all time Pat
They had a HOF Lineman
And a couple good QBs.
Saban has talent when he took over. Just needed to fill in the holes.

Once again, LSU wasn't ranked #5 going into 1997.

used to have signs that read:
Dinardo for president

I remember the "Geaux Dinardeaux" bumper stickers. Later they changed to "Dinardo just go"
