Cruz/Rooney to Dems on Constitutional Amendments: Hold my beer

Warning: CNN Link
It won't go anywhere (the entrenched power elite will absolutely not cut off their source of power and influence), but I like that he tried again regardless.

Washington (CNN)Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and Republican Rep. Francis Rooney proposed a Constitutional amendment on Thursday that would impose term limits on members of both houses of Congress.
The amendment, co-sponsored by Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), and David Perdue (R-Ga.), would restrict senators to two six-year terms and House members to three two-year terms. A similar amendment was proposed by Cruz in January of 2017.
"For too long, members of Congress have abused their power and ignored the will of the American people," Cruz said. "Term limits on members of Congress offer a solution to the brokenness we see in Washington, D.C. It is long past time for Congress to hold itself accountable. I urge my colleagues to submit this constitutional amendment to the states for speedy ratification."
The concept of term limits has gained traction in both parties -- notably, former Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke, a potential 2020 hopeful who ran against Cruz for the Senate, has called for term limits for Congress earlier this year.
President Donald Trump has voiced his support for term-limits for members of Congress, tweeting in April of last year that he met with a bipartisan group of lawmakers and he endorsed their efforts.
It won't go anywhere (the entrenched power elite will absolutely not cut off their source of power and influence), but I like that he tried again regardless.

Oh boy.
Now this will be fun to watch play out.

I support this.
But no way the K Street lobbyists allow a term limits bill to become constitutionally ratified. They invest too much money in capturing politicians. Term limits would make congressional capture a lot more tricky for lobbyists like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other open border organizations.

Cue the "but they can always be voted out" argument (as the rigged game of only two candidates with lobbyists money is ignored).

Do something about lobbying after these terms are carried out as well. Would be awesome.

This used to be a great idea, but if Republican incumbents can't run vote harvesting by dims will keep out new Republicans. See Orange county California.

Cruz proposed the same bill last January
Nothing happened with it

Its awesome! But its one of Trump's campaign goals/promises. Therefore, the left will fight this on that one reason alone so as to not let Trump have a win. As others have mentioned, corp money buys our politicians and they will not let that happen either.
I fully support Ted in his endeavor.

I assume this means Cruz plans to not run again after his second term is done?

Would term limits bring about a new "shadow government" (for lack of a better description)? I just can't see some, esp Dems leaving power. Think Biden, Pelosi, Schumer, Obama, et al. Think they would become lobbying parties for special interests since they have "inside knowledge" of how to subvert the political process.
I could be totally wrong and maybe they retreat to their home states and run for office there.
But when you have money, power is the next desire.

quote:what ever happened to McCain's fake arse term limits bill? also, can they all do insider trading or will they join Martha Stewart's old jail cell?
that would impose term limits on members of both houses of Congress.

Oh, he's running. But not for Senate

I would change it to allow for House members to be elected to 6 two year terms for consistency, but otherwise I don't see a single valid position against Congressional term limits.

DOG AND PONY SHOW.
WHERE THE HELL WAS THIS A YEAR AGO WHEN THE REPUBLICANS CONTROLLED BOTH HOUSES?
-Not that it would matter considering the 2/3 majority you need to get it to the states to vote on.
