FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Five children heading to Disney World in a church van from Louisiana died along with two truck drivers in fiery crash on Interstate 75 in north Florida, the Florida Highway Patrol said Friday.
The children were traveling in a large passenger van from Avoyelles Parish, Lt. Patrick Riordan said during a news conference on Friday morning in Alachua, which is south of Gainesville.
On Thursday, a big rig and a passenger vehicle collided in the northbound lanes of the highway and continued across the guardrail and into the path of another big truck and the church van, investigators said.

"Once those semis struck, they both caught fire," Riordan said. He said a fifth vehicle came through and either struck people who had been ejected from the vehicle or debris. Some 50 gallons (1.6 kilometers) of diesel fuel spilled, flaming the fire that also damaged the road in some spots.
At least eight people were sent to the hospital with injuries.

Big trucks should have to stay in the right lane.

I read in the article that they are treating it as vehicular homicide, but no details on why yet.

Damn. I saw that story yesterday. Didn't know they were from Louisiana.

Jesus Chris, that's awful.

It's metric. They put that stuff in there to make the article have an international feel. I think they learn that in journalism school.

Won't disagree but people in the other 2 lanes need to learn how to drive.
Sad day

On 75 in Florida they’re supposed to, and the middle lane is for passing.. There’s numerous highway sings saying so...
I’ve driven the route many times, 1-75 scared the shite out of me...

Big rigs becoming automated will save so many lives.
Methed up truckers are scum.

Very tough time right now. One girl that passed was friends with my oldest son, one that survived is one of my daughters best friends and my wife teaches several of the passengers. Just horrible.

I-45 in TX has signs that strictly forbid 18 wheelers from driving in the left lane, and the only bad part of the interstate is between Corsicana and Huntsville. Only because of its two lanes.
I really think its time for all Interstates to be mandated as at least 3 lanes and restrict all 18'wheelers to the right lane only.

It was really hard not to comment on local fb friends bitching online about the traffic yesterday. If you're in a position to bitch, that means your family gets to see you again.

One of my drivers came up right behind this yesterday at the end of her run from Tallahassee to Gainesville, and called me to let me know that she was going to be late to the lab. She told me that multiple people had died. Just awful.

My parents were were right behind this traveling to see family in Sarasota. They are so sad for those people, but also really thankful they just missed being involved.
This is absolutely horrible. I kept wondering if there would be a thread on this.

We drive 75 all the time and I hate it. It's always crazy busy and constant construction makes it even scarier. It's always a sigh of relief to get back onto 10.
This is so heartbreaking.

I guess if you stretch 50 gallons of diesel on the road it comes out to 1.6 kilometers.
