Carter, your granddad, Mr. Lindsey, was indeed a fine man. He did not look at those kids as juvenile delinquents but as kids who mostly never had a chance.
Thank you sir. He passed away almost 12 years ago but he was always great storyteller and LTI came up often.

I found this in a 2013 thread.
quote:
Cantrell won a TR straw poll on who was the toughest/meanest Tiger football player, by a landslide. There are a 1000 stories about him out there, but a friend of mine likes to tell this one when Cantrell's name comes up. Friend was a BRP sherriff's deputy, stationed at the office near the old Keg. He said that many times, when a call would come in regarding a fight at the bar with Cantrell involved, more than a few deputies would duck out the back door.On a Wed afternoon, out of season, a call came in. He was a relatively new deputy so he was curious as to what all the fuss was about. He went with 3 other deputies, 2 weighing over 250 lbs & as they entered the bar, they could see Cantrell playing a pen ball machine...they paid off back then...in a far corner. Taking only a few steps inside, one of the bigger deputies yelled at Cantrell to come along quietly. Cantrell didn't blink or hesitate: he picked up the pen ball machine like it was a piece of foam rubber, swung it around & walked steadily towards the deputies. Not saying a word. As he approached, he started swinging it back & forth, staring into one set of eyes at a time. The lead deputy immediately called for backup, went back outside to wait. 3 units pulled up, 2 deputies in each & then & only then did the 10 deputies go back in side. Cantrell was sitting at the bar, just staring at them. It took 7 to jump him while the other 2 cuffed him. Charges dismissed down the road.

Yeah!...That didn't happen.
With the exception of maybe George Atiyeh, basketball player Greg Cook would have slapped any "bad arse" mentioned in this thread in front of their girl friends with impunity.

I’m from the South Lafourche area and know Art Cantrelle is from the bayou but ended up at Biloxi High. What’s the story there?
Before his senior year in high school in South Lafourche, he was expelled (another story) and therefore could not attend high school in Louisiana his senior year. I believe he had an Aunt that lived in Biloxi, so he went there and attended Biloxi High his senior year.

He was not expelled he was too old. The age limit was 18. Cantrelle was 19 for his Sr. year so he transferred from South Lafourche to Biloxi so he could play his Sr. year. That is the Facts.
Also, another little tidbbit. He grew up in the Delta Farms area in Larose. My stepfather grew up there as well and was a little older. Knew him well and always said he was a good guy but if you crossed him he would F*&^ing Kill You!

Again, Andolsek.
You have no idea of the shear animalistic rage he was capable of, and at a muscular 6’2” 290 lbs with hulk like strength it was awe-inspiring. There was one man Eric Hill stepped to the side for.........guess who it was.
All these badass stories are that. Stories.
Physics has a way of validating everything.
Was Cantrelle tough in a legendary way? Sure, but some of it wasn’t cool.....or so I’ve been told.
Badasses are all relative when reality and physics get involved.

Kind of a wild look in his eyes in his playing days at LSU with big fists.
Tough guy to avoid confrontation with.

got anyone tougher???
Probably not "tougher", but in the same league - old school guys like Steve Van Buren and Jimmy Taylor were legitimate badasses.
Cantrelle is the textbook example of a legend in this category, though.

I am a contemporary of Cantrell’s and can confirm many of the stories. However, I find it remarkable that no one has mentioned Billy Cannon. Perhaps it is less well known due to more sparse media coverage, but he was a well known brawler, often going to bars on West Bank of Mississippi to do his damage. He was, of course, later an all pro tight end with Oakland Raiders. In the 70’s when John Matuszak (voted in 2005 one of the top 5 “bad boys” in NFL history) was with Raiders, a sportswriter in Bay Area opined “that the rough bars of Oakland hadn’t seen anything like Matuszak since Billy Cannon retired”.

I remember walking by Andolsek on campus a lot. Dude's knuckles looked like they drug the ground and his head looked like a battering ram. A real cro magnon looking human...also from down the Bayou.

Bill Elko (Frank Kush's nephew). Legendary story of him and Greg Cook in Broussard dining room.

Do tell. I lived in Broussard at the same time and don't remember any incident. Elko was actually pretty easy-going. He hung out with us his first year at LSU after transfering because he couldn't travel on road trips. Cook was a little ornery.

he was a tough SOB, funny as hell, but when he got a hold of the firewater, look out, I worked at the Bengal and the Caterie, twice he cleared the Bengal while on top of a pool table swinging a couple of cue sticks like nunchucks, the guy bartenders were supposed to act as quasi security, the manager looked at a coupe of us and just shrugged his shoulders, he used to like to stand in that porch swing in the back room of the Caterie and chug pitchers of beer, double fisted, he was a bad dude but for sheer badasserie and thuggery, probably have to go with Cantrelle

relayed from a player there at the time. First day on the practice field. Cantrelle ask a number of players who was the baddest MF on the team. Once pointed out Cantrelle approached the guy and asked if it was true. One punch later with the guy laid out, Cantrelle, looked around and said now we know who is the baddest MF on the team.

Randy Adams / never played for LSU but fought Art in a Natchez barbershop to a dead tie. Maybe not tougher but just as tough. Ferriday boy but sadly passed on.
Posted on 1/4/19 at 4:07 pm to LSU - Mill Valley CA
Ask Art about the fight he had in Natchez, Ms in the barbershop with the young man from Ferriday. If he’s truthful he’ll admit it was a tie. That man’s name was Randy Adams, linebacker at Ferriday High before getting kicked off the team. Sadly Randy passed away a few years back.
