old friend and Army sergeant is in prison for life

I looked up to this guy when at Ft. Hood and spent lots of time over a three year span at his home with his family, I am at a loss of words for what he did and his current situation.
Haven’t seen or talked to him in over 20+ years but Damn John!!!!
Was looking to reconnect with him and am now torn, do I contact him or write him off?

Don't feel bad. I became good friends with this guy. Would go to his house in HS to play cards, hang out.... He was someone I would have considered a good friend back then.
