Need some group think on this buck. We don’t need the venison this year due to the kids both shooting does on a TYHP Hunt. But I am not sure whether this buck’s rack will come back next year with its unique swoop. This is our first year owning this place and we have not shot a deer yet. He would make a great mount for the house, but I don’t want to shoot him just to shoot him. So do you think this is a velvet injury or will it be back next year with hopefully more character?

I think you answered your own question with not needing to shoot him. If you like his rack and want to kill him then kill him but if you do he ain’t going to get any bigger.

Me personally I’d rather shoot that buck in 2 years when he put on more inches. Also to me that rack is fine and I wouldn’t shoot him just because his antlers are off, I think it makes him unique.

Whether you need to or not is dumb, you’re going to if you get the chance

Is he the best deer you’ve seen on camera this year? If so, let him breed.

He’s number 2. Number 1 was a nice 10 pt but we think someone made him into sausage because he has been MIA for a month now.

Our place is only 25 acres.

25 acres changes things. He's a shooter.

How long have you had him on camera and do you have more recent pics of him? He could be gone already

He was alive as of Thursday night. I’ve had him on camera all summer and fall.

Lol tv and the internet has really did a number on people. "next year he would be a good one, Ahh he is only 135" this year, dont shoot anything under 140", Oh he is only 3.5 yrs old, only shoot 4.5 yr olds or older"

OP, if it makes you happy.. shoot that deer. He is a fine deer with a unique rack. Will he be bigger next yr? maybe... he also may die of illness, car hitting him, fighting, or the neighnor shooting him. Hell, he may be 10miles away. Nothing ie guaranteed. All these hot shot hunters waiting waiting waiting for years... for what? Hopefully a 160" deer? I spend WAYYY too much money and time to not kill a good deer when i see him just because he may be bigger next year. I already filled my freezer in november, what am i gone do quit hunting these last 2 and a half months? lol Hell no! Im still going, shot a decent 9pt last friday, and guess what.. within 15mins of recovery i had soemone to give the meat to who needed it. And i am sure you can too. As long as the deer isnt wasting, shoot whatever makes you happy... not everyone else.

How many times have you seen him during the season when you could have killed him? I see a lot of people spending time wondering about if they should shoot a certain deer when you can’t really guarantee that there will ever be an opportunity. Just go hunting and try to kill a big deer. Be happy with what you have. Shoot what makes you happy.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say velvet injury. The other side is just too perfect and it's just a very odd 'distortion' I guess you would say

With that said, I would not let that deer walk on a 25 acre property lol. 90% the world would shoot that deer in a heartbeat.

Just try to kill him. Once you get him in the scope decide if you are gonna shoot him.

The OB will always tell you he needs another year. Why are we so hung up on others opinions on bucks? Do you expect one more year and he’ll be in the record book? If he walks out make up your mind and shoot the son of a bitch. Or don’t. Don’t feel like you need to ask internet people if they would shoot it.

I was just asking for others opinion. I am pretty novice at deer hunting so I thought i would see what others thought. No big deal. They aren’t going to come shoot this deer. Now, some squarehead neighbor might, and that’s ok. I am just excited to see some interesting genetics in our local deer population gene pool.

90% of OB posters haven’t killed a deer that big. Does that help?
