John Wayne's last public appearance was at the Independence Bowl in 1978 when Louisiana Tech played ECU. He received the Spirit of Independence Award at halftime. For that reason alone the Independence Bowl must never die.

Remember it started as a bowl for the Southland Conference champion to play a bigger type opponent. Then in 1981, they brought Texas A&M in against Oklahoma State and began to get big name schools. I remember it was a big deal when Ole Miss was chosen in 1983, and became the first SEC school to play in the bowl. Over the years some big name programs(Notre Dame, Bama, Georgia, LSU, etc.) have played in the Indy Bowl.

Iowa State folks love the cyclones. And they Drink. But they are not real good at it, they get obliterated.

False in my experience.

Plus they drank Memphis out of Busch light last year.

False meaning they do get obliterated, but it’s after a LOT of booze.

The rain is over. Game time temp will be 65 degrees. The match up isn't good enough for me to attend. But I'll watch on TV.

Busch Light...yes, the beer of choice up there when we visit. And that is what I meant, they love to drink, but they do not stop till they just cant move. They also love to wake and bake and do it again. These are 50 year old men.

Yep. I know them well.

Best tailgate atmosphere I’ve seen outside LSU. My first game there was an 11 AM kick against San Jose state. Team was 0-2 and it had stormed bad the night before so certain lots were closed. They still came out in droves. Every lot was packed and going hard at 6:30 when we got out. Stadium was absolutely packed to the brim.

Ames is a little treasure up there.

It’s always been a bowl where it’s either a bad year for a good team or a good year for a bad team. Either way, fan support is there so you always had good crowds.

The matchups were better when you had name brands like sec and big 12 since you’re right in the middle of where those conferences meet geographically.

Thinking about it more, the GOAT moment for the Independence Bowl isn't even something that happened in a game. It's when La Tech told them "Nah son we headed to bigger and better things like the Liberty Bowl", Liberty was all "Ehh, we'd rather have Iowa St", then La Tech crawled back to the Indy and was shocked they no longer had an invite.

Laugh at LA Tech thread. No Bowl game.

I forgot about that and That was a classic.

What ended up happening to tech that year? No bowl game?

Yep. A 9-3 La Tech that climbed as high as #19 in the polls sat home for bowl season b/c they thought they were too good to play an 8-4 ULM in the Indy.

But does that really matter though for a bowl game if it's an intriguing match up? Several examples already mentioned were really fun and interesting games.
