Pike County (MS) BUCK IS DOWN. Story inside

TLDR disclaimer.
So yesterday was my last day of work until January, and since the temp had dropped I decided to knock off at lunch and hit the woods. Me and my dad left about 1:45 and headed to the camp. Got settled in about 2:45. Was alot of wind and not much action. I had set up on a powerline between 2 big patches of hardwoods. I could see 500yds one way and 200yds the other. I had decided to sit on the ground and watch this area and try to catch a buck crossing one patch of woods to the other.. figured I had a better shot at getting a glimps of one that way instead of the hardwoods id been hunting and not seeing anything but doe. So about 4:40 i caught movement a good 400yds away, scoped it and it was a doe and yearling. So i went ahead and got on the edge of my seat, my shooting stick up, and ready, because i knew if i were to see something it would be in the next 30mins and it would happen fast.
It wasnt 2 mins later i saw a deer come out to my left about 120 yds in the sage grass and start to cross the powerline. I thought it was a doe because its head was down in the sage and walking. Soon as i scoped it, it lifted its head and i saw horns and knew it was a shooter. As i gathered myself (quiclly) he was already over halfway across and about 4 steps from entering the woods. I set crosshair and squeezed the trigger (6.5 creedmore). Deee hunkerd forward and ran off. I felt like i made contact, so i immediately walked straight to where i saw him to look for blood while it was still daylight. NOTHING... looked 15mins and no blood. Still i felt like i hit the deer because of how he acted.
So i walked to the woods he ran into and looked around the edge. Still no blood, but i did find where his hoof prints had hit running. So i quietly followed that, and step by step nothing.. kept following and after about 50yds found 2 drops of bright red blood. I hung my orange vest and got out. I went back to the camp and called a guy i knew who had a dog. I had never had to use him before, nor use a dog in my life. But knowing I shot a good deer i didnt wana chance things. This guys was an hr away, but said he was comming. So i sit at the camp, replaying the whole hunt through my mind countless times wondering what had happend. But i had this calmness, because i felt i had made good contact. So my buddy shows up.
We load dog and i take him to the blood. This dog picks it up immediately, as we follow he gets to a creek, expecting to see dead deer dog keeps working, and crosses creek. He keeps goin, dog never lookd confused, yet confident... ends up to a slough that is about 3 feet of water, im like oh yeah deer laid up in this and died.. dog keeps working confidently out of the slough to the other side and goes to THE TICKEST OF THE THICKEST briar patch i had ever seen in my life.
We are on hands and knees crawling, and about 30yds in there he is. Man my emotions where all over the place. The excitement of finding the buck, plus this was my first time working with a dog on a trail.. awesome. The trail job was just as much fun if not more fun than the hunt. Then to top it off, once i put my hands on the deer, it ended up being my top target buck that had a little palmation on both sides...the only bad part was dragging that big boy out of all that back to the powerline. He weighed a little over 200lbs lol. But adreneline kept us motivated. Man what a hunt, what a trail job, and what a blessing. This is what it is all about.
I ended up hitting it about 4-6inches back than i intended (as you see me pointing at the skinned deer) Pics of deer on ground were exit hole not entrance. I caught back of one lung, liver, and exited guts on other side. Deer ran about 150ish yards.

Good story OP, congrats on the buck. Only comment is I’d say you were more like a 12 inches or more too far back. Better off shooting over the front leg then further back. Sounds like without the dog that’s a lost deer without a doubt.

Nice buck bud. Congratulations

definitely ideal.. lol If i could habe went and placed the bullet where I intended. But the whole thing lasted maybe 10seconds. He was in a steady walk and about to be out of sight. Shooting offhand with a single stick. It happens lol

A blood trail for someone that has trained a dog is like their crack cocaine. They’ll drive an hour for a deer shot by a friend of a friend they have never even met, won’t ask for gas money or expect any meat. Just a handshake and seeing the shooter’s smile when it’s found and being able to scratch their dog and tell him/her “good job, now load up!” Finding the deer is their payment. I’ve been out as late as 2:00 in the morning with a guy that had to be at work at 6:00. Get a call at 2:30 that afternoon saying he went back and found it. They cannot get enough of it. Lots of deer have been found because some good dudes took the time to train a dog when the deer otherwise would have been lost. It’s an under appreciated art until you experience it first hand. Often I have had more fun on the blood trail than the actual hunt, even if I was not the shooter.
Congrats.

When I hunt the ground I like a pair of coveralls. In the air with the bow, feelore comfortable in pants

Congratulations on a nice buck. Having a dog to trail deer is the bomb. There is no reason anyone shouldnt have access to one.
