Question for people who remember Watergate

Did Nixon's base circle the wagons like Trump's base has? Was it mostly dismissed as a witch hunt?
I've read Nixon thought the media was out to get him.
Even after the drip of evidence started was there still people that were in total denial that Nixon had done anything wrong?

The investigation into Watergate didn't start until Woodward and Bernstein uncovered hard evidence that an actual crime had taken place. The media didn't run with rumor and innuendo like they are doing now.

I agree. both those statements are true. But that's not really what I'm asking.
I'm specifically asking if there are parallels in the reaction of their bases. I read once that in Billy Graham's biography he absolutely believed that Nixon was innocent right up to the very end and it was very painful for him when Nixon admitted he had lied.
Just curious if that was the general feeling people had or if most people saw it coming long before.

I bet they were stunned when Nixon material was public after 25 years.
It was similar to today.
Trump is already guilty of two counts of obstruction.
Today is worse in that the constant lies do influence the weakminded. You see guys on TD calling for armed revolution because trump is not appreciated.

It's a stupid question. Until there is evidence of Trump doing something illegal, there is no comparison between the two situations.
Now if evidence is found and Trump's base continues to dismiss said evidence, then yes parallels could be drawn at that point.

Nixon had a 25% approval at the time of his resignation. This with the testimony of John Dean and the White House tapes and articles of impeachment having passed through the House Judiciary Committee. But the midterms were 3 months away and he was hurting re-election chances so he was cut loose.
ETA: season 1 of Slow Burn is a great listen.
