Schools are out of control, if the people only knew all the BS that they spend money on. The media will never report it though, because THE MEDIA is part of the problem, they get their marching orders from corporate.

How do you teach reading? Phonics. Or more explicitly, phonemic awareness.

It's always obvious which kids have parents who use these methods at home. They're always doing better than their peers.

Yep. Schools acting like they need "more money" is the biggest laugh ever. They have to house it in "raises for teachers who are underpaid" even though teachers are absolutely not underpaid. In Alabama, they're overpaid, and are set for life if they teach for 20 years.

I promise you, I do this every day, no joke

It'd have to be a root beer, as he doesn't drink (another aspect of life at which he's better than me ), but I'll pass the word along when I see him later this month!

My parents truly are the baseline for my own grounded approach to life. I shudder to think how I might have ended up without their influence. I see examples of it in my peers and it's eye-opening.

We want the best educators for our kids, but when taxes are involved we scream and yell that they are overpaid and they aren't any good and all that. But you run down to your local big corporation and go to hire someone and you have to be competitive and get the best talent you can. When the CEO gets a giant pay raise, even though stock price and dividends have been stagnant, everyone says you have to pay to attract and keep the top talent.

When my oldest was in her early school years, teachers were actually trying to PREVENT her from using phonics.

No we don't. If we did, we wouldn't set up so many road blocks to becoming a teacher.

When you have a system that says that Bill Gates isn't qualified to teach Business in HS, your local brain surgeon isn't qualified to teach biology there and Thomas Sowell isn't qualified to teach economics........you have a fricked system.

The best way to communicate with these students is by speaking to them in rhyming couplets. Johnny Cochran knew this:
"If the glove don't fit
You must acquit."

Bingo. Party of science...

Its like this, you can train certain breeds of dogs to lead the blind, hunt, do tricks, and other breeds you can't teach anything. It is purely scientific, and until we accept centuries of fact, we are going to destroy our foreheads smashing them against the wall.

There is a reason that Watkinsville has been exploding in size over the past 15 or so years.

People want to live "in Athens" but not in Athens-Clarke County.

Oconee County's public schools are MUCH better.

I was recently home shopping in the area. On the county line, the houses on one side of the street are 150% more expensive per square ft than on the other side.

Not even exaggerating.

Teaching degrees and certifications are massive roadblocks to actually improving education

A 45 year old engineer has a harder time trying to get into a public school to teach math than some ditzy teaching major who took a few math classes in college.

I actually wanted to teach when I got out of the military. I wouldn't have made a ton, but, the combination of a teacher's salary plus my retirement check would have made me fine. And, I would have just loved doing it.

I had a graduate degree(a real one LOL)......yet, when I look in to doing it, it was pretty much going to result in my spending the amount of money it would take to get another graduate degree just to be allowed to fricking teach elementary school. So, here I am having multiple math heavy graduate courses, and they want me to take 30+ credit hours to be allowed to teach a 4th grader to multiply!

It’s a racket. Between the useless teaching majors, the certifications that cost thousands, etc it all just drives away qualified people from teaching

Another problem with teaching as a profession is that moving up in terms of salary is 100% driven by time teaching.

Not being good at it, just time. If your superstar teacher in 3rd grade has 4 years of teaching time, they're making less than the teacher with 8 years who is like 1 degree from being fired

I am not crazy about this either, but what measures would you look at for merit based increases for teachers?

On getting into teaching, I am sure the process is probably way too crazy as it is government, but can everyone just teach because they are good at math? Not a knock on anyone, and teaching your own child may go well, but could you be successful teaching a room full of 30 kids? How do you know you could be successful. Teaching is more than just knowing how good your math or science skills are. I am great at math and use it every day, but I know I would have trouble teaching a room full of kids. It would be hard.
