In California's never-ending quest to tax everything, there are new reports that the liberal state may soon levy a tax on text messages.

California state regulators are working on a plan to charge cell phone users a fee for text messaging, all in the name of collecting taxpayer money to pay for programs to make phone service cheaper to low-income residents, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

quote:

Business groups, including the Bay Area Council, California Chamber of Commerce and Silicon Valley Leadership Group and others opposing the idea, calculated the new charges for wireless consumers could total about $44.5 million a year.

But they add that under the regulators’ proposal the charge could be applied retroactively for five years — which they call “an alarming precedent” — and could amount to a bill of more than $220 million for California consumers.

That's not what the article says... You just have to read until the end and stay focused.

Seems counterproductive if poor people with free Obamaphones have to pay a text tax

We are told to believe they are starving as they obesely waddle through the food stamp line with a bluetooth headset glued to their ear that is connected to the iPhone in their hand with the well-manicured fingernails

I'm curious as to why the state thinks that a phone is so important they are willing to tax everyone else so others can have it. It's not a right to have a phone.

Heard this about an hour or so ago. Speedy you are indeed.

Does the article say how much?? Retroactive 5 yrs will make me broke as all I do is text. And no way this would be legal as you would have to force the companies to give the govt your phone logs.

(Yes I judge thread creators by their speedy in getting news on here. As I have found this place a reasonable source of news. Just wish it was more spread out of LA a little more.)
