Can someone school me on cruises?

Wife and I are looking into a cruise for our 10 year anniversary in 2019. We aren’t looking to spend a ton of money and probably will want to port out of Nola to avoid paying for a flight.
Is Carnival that bad? Is Norwegian that much better? Would we be better off just flying to an all inclusive in the Caribbean instead?
Thanks!

Absolutely

Carnival cruises are about as trashy as advertised on TD. If you have the money to go to an all inclusive then do that 100%.

We went on our first cruise recently on a Norwegian ship and I surprisingly enjoyed it.
The rule is don't go on a four or five night carnival leaving from Nola, Mobil, or Galveston as those are the trashiest.
The people I talked to said the Noregian was a step up from Carnival.
Some of the people saying go to an all inclusive probably think that going to a Sandel's place is being fancy.
Just do your research and pick something that sounds good and is in your budget.

That’s quite presumptuous of you. I’ve never been to a Sandal’s myself. Hard to argue going to an all-inclusive, irregardless of resort, versus taking a Carnival cruise out of NOLA.

I think all inclusives are a horrible way to spend a vacation, but I’d sooner go to Sandals than a cruise, especially out of NOLA. Don’t care what cruiseline it is.

I just would rather not go to an all inclusive in general.
I’m not going to be going on another cruise for a long while as there are way too many other vacations I want to take.
We checked that one off the list so the kids would stop bothering us about it.

Been on both. NCL > Carnival. The food is much better on NCL because of the specialty restaurants.

I 100% agree with you.
And I feel the exact same way about cruises.

Agree. We ate at steak, French, and hibachi place for our specialty choices. All were solid. Regular dining was ok

Wife and I took a trip to Vegas once on the cheap. We stayed at the Golden Nugget while our friends booked at the Bellagio and MGM. They had fun. We did not have as much fun. Moral of the story...Spend the extra cash. Fly to Miami or San Juan and take a seven day cruise on a Royal Caribbean ship. When you pay extra, you typically get more.

just took the carnival cruise out of galveston to jamaica, grand cayman, cozumel. it was not nearly as trashy as it is made out to be on here. i was very surprised how many people were actually well dressed on the two formal nights.
the food at the formal dining was more than adequate, in fact i would go so far as to say it was really good. the entertainment on board was pretty good as well.
the drink package is worth it if you can drink 9 or more a day. they cut you off at 15. the wine at dinner with a drink card is not worth it, highlighted by me here: OT Thread
what i dont like is you spend 2 days on the boat to get to jamaica from galveston. then you only get 8 hours in jamaica. it would be nice to have more time in the places you are visiting, but the price is a lot cheaper than air fare/hotels for one of these islands.
overall i had a great experience. i didnt witness too many trashy people to be honest. accomodations seemed clean enough. granted other cruise lines are "better" than carnival, but if your timeframe is limited due to say a birthday or anniversary, carnival may be the only option. this was the case for our trip last month and we had a great time.

Royal Caribbean sails out of NOLA as well. Not sure how their prices/iteneraries compare to Norwegian.

Carnival is Walmart on a boat, leaving out of Nola it is the Walmart on the bad side of town that people try not to go to.
NCL is definitely better. All inclusive is much better if you can afford that option.

Both NCL and RCL are now sailing selected dates out of New Orleans. Definitely a much better option than Carnival. Do the cruise you’ll have a better experience.

Its not that bad unless you constantly worry about what other people are doing, wearing or eating. If you and your wife can enjoy spending time together then you will have fun. Get the drink package or each of you bring a bottle of wine and get some rum runners and bring your liquor that way. You restock on port days. Have fun.

i found that the drink package is more of a social fee than anything. granted normal people probably dont max out 15 every day, but sitting in the room or on your balcony sipping what you brought on board is no fun just to save a little money. you can meet lots of interesting people on board, and not all of them are trashy.

For our NCL cruise, you got to pick two of the special packages. One of the ones I picked for the wife and I was the unlimited alcohol. It was any drink you wanted that was $15 or less and there was no limit.
I drank a lot of Buillet bourbon.
Also, I did upgrade to a larger balcony so I could get away from it all from time to time to drink alone and take in the views.

it would make sense that carnival has to set limits on the passengers. to be honest 15 was more than enough by the time they cut me off.

I don’t get the all inclusive crowd either. It’s basically a cruise ship that doesn’t go anywhere. Still, much better than the floating trailer park. I’ve almost always worked in travel in some capacity so I’ve been subjected to both.
