RCCL is the best by far. I've had my share and fill of Carnival. If you are concerned about flight and getting off cheap, maybe Carnival is where you should be.

Spent a week at adult only inclusive resort in Jamaica. Only way to go. No money needed to be carried around. 3 bars open 22 hours a day. Restaurants open 24 hours. Great food, great drinks. Highly recommend trying it vs being stuck on a boat.

Wife and I are looking into a cruise for our 10 year anniversary in 2019. We aren’t looking to spend a ton of money and probably will want to port out of Nola to avoid paying for a flight.

Is Carnival that bad? Is Norwegian that much better? Would we be better off just flying to an all inclusive in the Caribbean instead?

Like most travel-related questions, the answer is "it depends."

If you and your wife are looking for a true "unplug, kick back, and relax" type of vacation, you probably want to do the all-inclusive.

But if you and your wife are more adventurous and want to see/visit different places, a nice cruise can be a great experience. I'd stay away from Carnival though. A 7-day Royal Caribbean cruise will filter out most of the trashiness.

Some of my favorite travel memories with my wife have been "ditching the crowd" at the different ports and going off to explore on our own.

You probably see where I'm going with this. You don't really go anywhere at an all-inclusive. Yeah, you can leave the premises, but you're still pretty much limited to the immediate surrounding area. BUT, when it comes to pure relaxation, it's hard to beat a good all-inclusive. Especially the truly all-inclusive ones where you can leave your wallet locked in your safe for the entire stay.

If you do choose a cruise, a highly recommend springing for a room with a balcony. One of the things I don't like about cruises is that - other than your room - it's hard to get away from the crowds and have some peace and quiet.

Sounds exactly like a cruise.

Whether you cruise or go to an all inclusive, it’s like everything else in life- you get what you pay for.

Certain cruise lines and itineraries absolutely attract trash. However, there are plenty that don’t, and cruising can be just as enjoyable as any other type of vacation.

Cruising and all-inclusives in general are virtually the same. The differences will come down to what cruise line, ship and itinerary and what all-inclusive and where it is located. There are cruises better than some all-inclusives and all-inclusives better than some cruises. The key is to find what you're looking for with your travel party.

Do you have kids traveling with you, if so, how old and what do they like to do. How high is eating quality food on your list of requirements? Do you want relaxation and solidarity or fun activities and group settings? How does flying impact your budget?

You can find cruises and resorts that can fit into either category, you just need to do the research on the front end and find something within your budget.

If you choose to cruise, I would suggest considering driving to florida and sailing out of port canaveral or tampa and if not there drive to galveston and sail royal caribbean out of there. You'll find "better" options out of those ports and if you are not sailing with kids you'll find better prices and an older clientele if you do not sail when kids our are out school (major holidays, summer, etc).

The whole appeal with a cruise was sailing out of NOLA and not having to spend time/money on a flight. I think I'd rather spring for a nice, non-carnival cruise for 7 days than pay for a flight to an all-inclusive.

Carnival is not that bad. I've been on most cruise lines, all-inclusives in one place, all other types of vacations. If it's just you and your wife, you like to party, and you don't mind other people, Carnival is the party line.

You can save money by bringing in your own booze in bladders. We generally refill them on one of the incursions. People begin to recognize us as the couple always walking around with our LSU Tervis's. The food is fine, but we are party animals and most of the time end up eating the late night pizza.

Maybe Carnival is not for you if you don't wanna party, listen to music, and meet other people. And as said above the food is better on other cruise lines.

If you can go on Carnival for 75% of the cost of one of the others and bring in your own booze as I suggested, you should go for it. You won't regret it.

Galveston can easily be driven in a day. Port canaveral and Tampa would not require an overnight stay before embarkation but it would be highly recommended.
