& the LSU Offense
Coach Orgeron’s Second Full Season, Steve Ensminger, Joe Burrow, & the LSU Offense

quote:
Mike: I picked them (8-4) and most national folks thought I was crazy. And many local folks too. Now, some are re-inventing their comments about the year, but truthfully most people picked them six wins or maybe seven. Nine wins was quite an accomplishment with the schedule, new quarterback in place, new offensive scheme, the issues upfront-which I think were telling at times, and so Coach O got the most out of his players this season. It’s something he does well.
quote:
I think Coach O and his staff really maximized talent. Other than the Arkansas game, and that was not a big surprise since it came after the Alabama game, he had them ready to go each week. That’s a tough road they traveled this year playing against Miami early, Auburn on the road, at Florida, beating Mississippi State, and Georgia at home, major disappointment game versus Alabama, and Texas A&M on the road in a game they should have won
quote:
Joe is tough, smart, a terrific leader, and I think he will be a much more accurate passer next year with a better sense of working with his receivers and a better concept offensively. And he had a lot of dropped passes too.
quote:
More experience at wide receiver with guys like Justin Jefferson, Dee Anderson, Stephen Sullivan and the young freshmen in Chase and Marshall. They have to work on catching the ball cleaner,
quote:
But you return Saahdiq Charles at left tackle, Austin Deculus at right tackle, Damien Lewis at guard, and Lloyd Cushenberry at center. And you’ve got Adrian Magee, Cole Smith, Traore Badara and Donavaughn Campbell back also. Chasen Hines, who got recruited as a defensive lineman, got moved and saw a lot of action at guard for LSU as a freshman. And there’s the move of another freshman in Dare Rosenthal to left tackle during the year.
quote:
Lloyd Cushenberry at center. Will Clapp was a very good SEC offensive lineman and now with the Saints, and I thought Lloyd handled that critical center position well in his first season as a full-time starter. Physical, long-armed center and he has good positioning skills. Made the proper calls to pick up the inside blitzes. It’s a tough spot to play to be the signal-caller along the offensive line, but Lloyd did very well.

Does he know something we don't know about a new OC?

Many will disagree, but this is fair.
However with a more veteran team next year I'd expect improvements, 2 loss regular season at worst IMO.

Depressing. I guess we really are stuck with Ensminger for another season.

This is and always has been pretty obvious. O isn't going to admit he whiffed on 2 OC hires in 2 years as head coach. He, and importantly, Alleva, are inextricably tied to the Ensminger hire so they will do anything in their power to make it seem like its working. Only way we have a new OC is if Ensminger himself steps aside.

Isn't his contract up very soon. Hopefully we move on from him and his mediocre sports loving arse.

Like putting lipstick on a pig. What good is stealing a win from UGA when Coach O loses to aTm and UF because he coached scared and a shite offense? Stealing a W from UGA should’ve resulted in a 10-2 or 11-1 season. Instead his lack of offense and continuing to coach not to lose cost us 2 more games.
2 years removed from Les and we still see the same exact issues.

If the offensive line can't block you're not going to be successful. I think Mike was spot on.

Most of the pre-season low expectations were motivated by 10% schedule, 10% personnel, and 80% uncertainty on O being able to handle the rigors of an entire SEC season. He folded bad and early (Canada thing) in '17.

Preseason prognosticators also didn’t envision a 5 loss Miami, a 5 loss Auburn, a 4 loss Miss State.....

If the offensive line has trouble blocking and you continue to call long play action passes you're not going to be successful.

Still throwing the players under the bus, huh?
Whose responsibility is it to teach and develop offensive linemen? Further, whose responsibility is it to recognize the team's weaknesses (perhaps - pass blocking?) and tweak the offensive scheme and play-calling to try and account for said weaknesses?

I love it. It's always the coaches. Always. Lots of teams should be firing theirs about now.

What he does know is that you can't turn water into wine. He knows football. And if your reading comprehension was above a 3rd graders, you'd understand that O pretty much maximized the talent he had to work with on offense.
Again, this season is indicative of how good our staff is. The question remains whether or not O can get the talent and depth needed to compete at the highest level.
The staff, the knowledge, the organization is all in a very good place.

Not all the time. Obviously players are human and make mistakes. But when you can't execute a simple screen pass in week 11 against Rice, I have a hard time laying it all at the feet of the players. The offense is clearly poorly coached from the top down in terms of development and in terms of scheme and playcalling.

Yeah, I mean now is when teams are usually looking to make changes in terms of coaches. The regular season is over. What's the point you're trying to make here?

When you want to have a conversation about why the offense was bad I'll be ready but I'm not throwing anyone under the bus as you call it. I'm sure that the players in question are well aware of their shortcomings this season. Sometimes you are stuck with who you are stuck with and LSU put the players they had out there. I would imagine that they called play action because often the blocking schemes are disguised to look like a run and the offense could run block slightly better than pass block but the poster asking about it should send Steve an email.

Well a lot of that is because LSU took it too them and they couldn't recover mentally. So add a win to each of them because no one thought LSU would beat them.
And that's a major difference with O. When they have lost a game they should have won, they've managed to pick the team up and get them back going forward. That's truly great coaching.
Richt and Malz are not coaches have not been able to do that near as well as O.

Ranked #11 in the nation, New Year's Day bowl game, #4 or #3 recruiting class (depending on paid recruiting site used) coming in - what's not to hate for the Rantards?
