I need a procedure for this. I see it mentioned here frequently.
My son just went away to college. He doesn't have a grill, but he does have an electric stove. We recently sent him a spare cast iron skillet. I need a step by step method so I can send it to him. Google didn't yield a consensus of technique, so I came here.
TIA.

Recently (past year or so), Ive been doing my steaks in a cast iron skillet almost exclusively, just to change things up. Usually buy NY strips. I set the heat to about medium high, add a little oil to the pan, drop the steaks in and I find 4 minutes per side gets me a great sear on both sides and cooks to a nice medium. Let rest 10 minutes and enjoy. Nothing to it.

Since college students are always on the run, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get him a blue tooth sous vide device.

I have one that I never use. I may gift it to him.

Yea I wouldnt fry my steaks either.
He can sear them with/without oil in a seasoned cast iron skillet. With oil, rub a little on the meat - then drop in hot skillet.

Is he in an apartment? Does he have a vent hood??
As small grill may be a better investment

If he isn’t in a dorm, then he needs a cheap gas grill on patio..., we used ours almost every night in college

I agree w small grill....couldn’t have gas where I lived, so the electric Meco grill was our go-to. Chicken, cheap thin steaks, hot dogs....we wore that thing out. Kept the kitchen clean & the crappy kitchen free of smoke/grease, as we had no functioning vent hood.

First year. He's in a dorm. Maybe switch to an apartment next year.

If he’s in a dorm, he presumably doesn’t have a vent so he probably shouldn’t be searing steaks because of the smoke he’ll be creating

In a dorm? Outback is his best bet on a college budget.

Dorm cooking brings backs memories. Lived in old Evangeline Hall ar LSU, we were two doors down from the floor kitchen with it’s terrible electric stove. It did have a window, but no AC. On weekends when the cafeteria was closed, we would fry boneless chicken breast strips rolled in crushed saltine crackers swiped from the old Highland Cafeteria lunch line. I remember steaming artichokes with my suite mates and teaching some country girls from Pollock how to eat them. We were masters at making something out of nothing plus leftover condiments.

Seconded....he'll set off a smoke detector in a hurry doing this without a proper vent, especially in as confined of a space as a dorm room/suite.

I'll have to verify on the vent for the stove. Honestly, I just assumed that it had one. Not sure now that I think about it.....
