I passed on an 8ptr 3 times this season, but decided to get him this evening with my muzzleloader (real side hammered muzzleloader). Gun season opens tomorrow and I figured someone else would take him anyway.

Anyhoo...I don’t do shoulder mounts anymore, so I’d like to go with a European mount.

Do any of you baws have advice on this?
Maybe some shortcut or method.

Pay someone $100 to $150 to do it for you and avoid the hassle.

Not really a short cut. But just skin an remove all meat. Put skull in low simmer boiling water use a throw away aluminum cooking pan, add dawn dish liquid to water. Wire brush an scrape off meat after simmering for 1 hr or so don’t over boil or bones in nose will break. Use a 10$ bleach kit from the dollar store or you can go to a beuty supply an get the real stuff. Make sure to apply aluminum foil for masking around the bases of the antlers before bleaching or biking them.
Use the 100-150 you saved to buy N drink the beer while doing the boiling an scraping

I buried mine almost to the antlers (you don't want the antlers in the dirt or it will discolor them where the dirt touches. I put a large metal tub over it with some small holes for flies to be able to get in (probably not necessary on teh holes but I think they were in the tub anyway). Make you have a heavy weight on the tub so critters won't carry off you prize. After about 8 months I pulled it up and soaked the skull in a light solution of bleach making sure no bleach got on the antlers.

It came out OK. Not as nice as having someone professional do it with dermisted beetles I'm sure.

This. One addition: use powder oxy clean when you put it in to simmer, it will turn the remaining meat to jelly. Use a wire coat hanger to remove the brain and sinus cavities. It’s way easier than you think, don’t be intimidated.

Not saying this is wrong if you have the money to do it.

But now that I have done a few and understand how easy it is to do a quality job myself, Ill never pay a dime to a taxi for a euro mount again.

This

Tried it one time and wound up burning a jambalaya pot-sized hole in my deck.

I'll do it for you. $75 for just the skull or $100 on a plaque or driftwood. Look me up on Facebook, Bare Bones Skull Mounts.

2nd the burying method.

Simmering is a pain in the arse and can’t stand that smell.

I don’t leave it in the ground very long, maybe a month then clean with hose or pressure washer.

I also don’t dye them white no matter the method. Prefer natural color.

The way I did it was:
1) Skin out head
2) Simmer in pot for a full 24 hours - don't boil just keep it warm. Do it outside - hotplate on patio.
3) Hose off carefully - Brain will wash right out. Watch teeth in upper jaw. If they come loose they can be super glued back in but you don't want to lose them. Be careful of sinus bones so you don't break them.
4) Bleach skull if desired just be sure to wrap up antlers.

I’ve done it before but it’s been a long time. I actually have one that needs to be done.

Anyone have advice on what to do with one where all the fat and meat has just dry rotted? It’s a dingy looking thing right now. Two years old just hanging in a shed. All I did was skin it.

We actually made a pot for boiling out with a hot water heater heating element. Drilled hole in side of pot, screwed in heating element, seal up for leaks, plug direct into a 110 outlet. About 8-10 hours later clean as a whistle.

Same way I do it. 1500w element seems to be the right size to give a good simmer.

Before the boil

After the boil

Gonna boil in some aqua silk next. Magicman came through with a simple wooden mount for me.
