Dredd is a great answer. As far as a smaller film that I lucked into seeing: Coherence.

Id agree with whoever it was earlier that said The Way Way Back. That was surprisingly very good. A 5 million budget.

Mud w/ McConaughey was really good and under the radar at the time. 10 million budget.

The Last Samurai

The premise was idiotic and not a Cruise fan, but damn the movie was good and though full of Hollywood BS caught the Meiji Period of Japan pretty well.

This is a good one too. I saw it in the theater because my wife and I went on a date and it was the only remotely interesting movie in the theaters.

Laughed far more than I expected too.

Just an absolute masterpiece of cinema. I mean, I can't think of too many movies that are as beautiful to look at as that one. Just a wonderfully shot and edited movie and Tom Cruise acts his arse off. One of those movies that really shouldn't work, but absolutely does.

Whiplash is easily the top choice for me. A movie about an aspiring jazz drummer and his experience at a music school that stars Miles Teller and the "older guy from the state farm commercials"? Made for $3 million? Nothing about that screams one of the best movies of this current century, but it is

I saw Captain Fantastic last week on tv and thought it was pretty damn good considering there wasn't much buzz around it

What We Do in the Shadows is the epitome of this.

Triangle surprised me like crazy.

I thought it was going to be some lame slasher or something by the cover.

Totally blew me away.

And if you want to see the movie, don't watch the trailer.

I had never seen the trailer and the trailer gives everything away.

I went and saw Rampage just because I like The Rock and because I LOVED the game when I was a kid. I expected absolutely nothing and I was extremely surprised. I thought it was rather good. The Rocks relationship with George was hilarious.
