ND's case, going 12-0 or 11-1 should be equivalent to a conference championship

That would be a test to see how much a conference championship matters.
Comparing Notre Dame and Michigan and saying well Michigan has a conference Championship and ND doesnt 1up for Michigan is as dumb as saying ND has 12 wins wearing gold helmets Michigan has 0 wins so 1up for ND

tOSU’s big loss to Purdue + weaker schedule will negate the slim winning % margin they’d have over 1-loss ND.
It’s not possible for Michigan and tOSU to both go 12-1. Even I’d tOSU was currently undefeated it’s not possible for both Michigan and tOSU to play 13 games before the bowls
ETA: this topic was poorly worded
You could just say if Notre Dame loses 1 game they probably won’t make the playoffs

There is no equivalent to a conference championship when you refuse to join a conference.

Bama and OSU both got in without going to the CCG. It isn't the end-all-be-all when the criteria is best 4.
BUT, their schedule this year is not as they had hoped, with only Michigan really being great. It would be hard to include them over a one-loss conference champ this year if they drop a game.

And you're bringing up two teams, and completely ignore the circumstances in which they they made it. What Ohio State and Bama proved is that conf championship isn't the be all and end all, not that they don't matter.
The alternative in those cases would have been a two loss conference champion. When a one loss non conf champ gets in over a one loss conf champ, then we can talk.

There is 0 reason for Notre Dame to join a conference, especially if we go 11-1 and make the playoffs. Get 5 ACC games a year, every single game is on easily accessible national TV, and get the ACC bowl bids. Without having to play a full conference schedule we also got to schedule 2 PAC12 games, 2 Big 10 games, and an SEC game. Notre Dame will have played a team from 4/5 of the P5 conferences, name another school to do that?
Now explain why it is we should join a conference?

Basically UM’s SOS will be somewhere around #5 if they win out; ND’s will be ~25; tOSU’s will be ~40.
I'm not going to lie, the older I get, the dumber SOS is to me. Who cares if you beat a bunch of average teams.
If team A plays 12 teams all ranked between 40-60 in the country and team B plays 4 teams in the top 10 and 8 teams ranked 90-120, SOS will probably have team A's schedule as tougher. Which schedule are you more likely to lose 2-3 games playing if you're a good team (hint, it's Team B's schedule)?
It is important to look at, but people throw it around like that should end all debate.

Well that year there was 1 undefeated P5 Champ and 4 P5 champs with 1 loss plus TCU so at least 2 were getting left out

If you play four top ten teams and lose two of them while taking relatively few body blows with the rest of your schedule, haven’t you shown us exactly why you shouldn’t be in the playoff?

lol, according to this pleb logic, ohio state should have gone independent last year AFTER WINNING THEIR CONFERENCE and being left out of the playoffs

conferences are dated.
the future is independent football where the big boys drop the bottom tier leach programs. lol at ohio state or michigan being content with sharing B1G money with Rutgers.
once one makes the move, the dominoes will fall across the country

Come on
conference championship games can either hurt your cause or help it; its not an 100% positive as it also gives you another chance at losing
lets say michigan finishes 11-1: do you really think they are going to want to risk a B!G title game vs northwestern ?
winning that game does nothing to boost their resume

I think you are way to hung up on the 12-1 being a better record than 11-1 like the rest of us don’t understand some complicated model

A 1 loss ND vs 1 loss Michigan is obviously a fascinating discussion given the head to head but I agree UM had a tougher schedule the ND loss was at ND, I give more value to winning on the road) and UM would have a conference title (I value conference titles but feel it should be decided in the regular season record rather than a CCG) so I’d have no problem with UM getting in.
1 loss tOSU over ND is easier for me since I don’t care about “quality of loss”, both would have beaten UM at home, tOSU has a better SOS and conference title.
The better discussion there would be 12-1 tOSU vs 12-1 OU assuming 13-0 Alabama, 13-0 Clemson 12-0 Notre Dame
