And are Republicans actively trying to do anything? Seems like both sides are complacent in the ridiculous rising costs and diminishing value of higher education.

Tenure for professors is the scam that is killing higher education in our country

Student loan funding should be scaled based on average starting salaries for the major (and university).

Student loans should not be federally backed, which would banks would be a lot pickier about who they loaned too.

Also, let student loan debt be eliminated via bankruptcy, making banks even MORE careful .

As it stands ANYONE can get a student loan and just default on it at will.

Depends on how you look at it.

If youre going into college and just want to learn stuff, no not necessarily.

If you go to college simply because it will make you more money in the long run, yes it probably is unless youre taking a handful of majors (law, medicine, engineering, finance, accounting, etc).

I think the emphasis needs to be shifted from the "prestigious" school to one where you can get the degree cost effectively

in almost every one of the "horror stories" that get put in print or posted online, kids go to private schools (sometimes not even good or mediocre ones) AND get degrees without much economic use...and they go for the economic use

you can argue that being educated is worth paying money for, wherein the economic output isn't in line with the cost

you cannot argue that being educated for a job is worth an extreme cost

What they do at Harvard is impressive. Getting in. Competing against the best. Learning from the best. Getting the best internships.

Sorry, but no FAU doesn’t even compare.

The main reason college costs have skyrocketed is because demand is high due to Pel Grants and guaranteed student loans.

Do away with those and demand goes down which means supply goes up, which means the cost goes down.

Think of this way.

It's simple economics.

Pell Grants dont really cover that much, typically less than cost of tuition.

I do agree though that loans have exacerbated the problem because the students dont really care because its not their immediate money. Also on campus housing drives up cost significantly.

They still contribute to the supply and demand of college though.

Nope.

Demand is high. But so is the supply. There aren’t kids crying that they couldn’t find a college to attend because all the spots were taken.

The main reason is the bloated administration.

Can they though? I got fortunate enough to not have to take a penny in loans. Paid for college 100% myself.

If a student defaults on the loan, their future wages will be garnered eventually right? So they'd either have to be alright to hussle and make "under the table" money or get a normal job and let the wages be garnered.

Ya. Wage garnishment with fed loans. Private loans can sue you.

Not sure what that guy is talking about

why not scale the cost of tuition based on the cost of the degree/overhead? we complain about gender studies majors incurring debt and not having gainful employment when they graduate. why should tuition for a gender studies degree cost a much as an engineering or computer science degree?

it is MUCH cheaper to provide a humanities education than an education in a STEM field. so scale the cost of tuition, rather than student loan funding.

Mine was well worth the investment. My only regret was not finishing sooner.

what?

Here's one article from 2016 discussing the shortage and how schools are trying to fix it

LINK

Here's a pretty good article on the subject from 2014

I can provide other links if necessary. The demand for seats has caused the rise in cost.

Text Books
Progressive professors, admins

Jacks up real estate in nearby communities

But, the worst part of the scam is now everyone gets a degree. They make it where anyone and everyone can get a degree. When everyone can get a degree it makes it less and less valuable.

I am pretty sure Harvard is getting sued because that isn't what they do.
