It definitely does not need to be 4 years. I mean it’s good for the kids to have four years to be in college but not so good for the parents if it’s more expensive. I guess it just become a tradition but theres real no rationale for it.
Of course colleges will charge by the credit if you think you’re going to save money by getting done year faster

Not sure why you addresses this to me.

College has been this way for a long time. If you want to go to a trade school, do that.

The point of college is to get educated. The result of the education is the ability to find better work, hopefully with more pay.

No one is forcing anyone to attend 4 year schools.

Btw, not all schools charge by the credit. It is your job to find them. Free market and all.

When I was at Wisconsin tuition covered 12 credits and above. Same price if you took 12 or more. Today, as listed, tuition covers 12-18 credits per semester, not including summer school.

Wut? $2.93- 2.29 mil is not $70k, it’s $700k.

The biggest lie is you go to college to get a job. Not the case anymore. You go to college to get a college degree. That degree is not always worth anything monetarily.

Traditionally, higher education was never about getting a job.

College degree says really one thing. That you have the ability to start something and finish it.

Everyone whining about non relevant courses misses the point. Life is gonna have stuff that sucks that you have to slog through. That you can do this means something. Perseverance.

A person getting an Accounting or IT degree doesn't need to take Sociology 1001. It's pointless and a waste of time and money. They should take only relevant courses and maybe intern for free for a semester or 2. Higher education is mostly an expensive joke now.

Somewhat... but relevant degrees are the only paid education with any value. An engineer has to learn stuff to become an engineer. Simply proving he can "finish something" is far from the goal.

Stossel does put some good stuff together. Agree with him or not.

I would say it's a scam since they churn out people not ready for work. A company needs to train way to much out of the gate in basic stuff, so hurts pulling the trigger on one.

You neither understand college nor the working world.

How do you...er...live?

I’m not saying the courses don’t help you get a job.

Btw, engineering and business aren’t part of the traditional college education. I’m taking going back to 1500s to now.

As for relevant degrees, couldn’t disagree more. The world is full of people with liberal arts degrees that are successful.

I know plenty of people who went to Madison and excelled in B-school, and that was when it was a top ten program, that couldn’t succeed in the business world.

There is a huge difference between being good at school and being good in the real world.

So there's no end game to a curriculum that doesn't contain irrelevant fluff? Again, it's a collosal waste of time and money. It's also a massive misallocation of resources.

If you aren't planning on being a history professor then there's no point in spending 10k to learn it. It's readily available via many different avenues for free if you wish to enhance your own knowledge.

When was college ever supposed to “churn out people ready for work?”

The end game is to produce educated people.

Sorry you don’t understand this. If you want your idea then simply get an associates in science.

Getting credit for protesting Kavanaugh is not “producing educated people”.

Nor is wasting 4 years for a gender or ethnic studies degree

Any “successful liberal arts major” could have been so without wasting the time and money on the degree

Colleges give credit innclases for all sorts of things. Pretending this is something major or worth discussing is dumb.

Wasting: that is your opinion. If they get a degree and have internships or jobs in college and work after college and are productive citizens there is no issue.

Your last paragraph is just outright dumb.

I think my system accomplishes this goal much cheaper. I have 2 bachelor's degrees. 60% of my coursework was a waste of money, luckily at a much cheaper cost than today.

I'd love to list the skills that Greek Mythology and Art History 1001 & 1002 provided for me in my career but I can't think of any.
