topic brought up in the OneBR/TogetherBR/StG thread.

How is this legal for nonprofits to buy cellphone data from the Secretary of State?

I really didnt appreciate a spam text from a left wing non profit.

Maybe legislators thought it was a good way for the state to raise revenue?

It is public record.

Plus candidates and their campaigns get access to constituents. It is actually pretty cool. You get a disk with all registered voters in a defined area. It come ins excel format so you can do mailouts, call centers, etc.

What would make it illegal? Your cellphone number isn't some protected info. I'm not advocating for it because I don't think they should do it, but i don't see how you can question the lagality.

It’s been legal to sell your voter information to campaigns for a lonnngggggggggg time.

The difference is, now everyone puts their cellphone number on their voter registration instead of their house number.

Don’t want your number getting sold, don’t put your number on your voter information

Why would the SOS have a personal cell number of a voter?

To sell to campaigns so they can forward you political information/remind you to vote/alert you of any changes in your polling place.

If that's the case then there needs to be a law to stop it.

The law for the Do Not Call Registry specifically exempted political campaign calls. Funny how those frickers wrote themselves in as an exception.

Just like how the LA legislators exempted themselves from the Window Tint law. How the hell does being an elected official make you more deserving of window tint than anyone else?

Tell your representative. I’m sure they’ll hop right on it, seeing as that information (in their eyes) helped get them elected

There's no legal requirement to give them your cell number. What possible legitimate reason could there be for SOS to call you about your voter registration? If you're too dumb to guard your cell number you deserve the spam calls.
