Years after the adoption of Common Core, ACT scores are lowest in over a decade

We teachers told everyone we knew that it was a bad idea. Of course, policymakers never listen to us.

After years of Common Core standards, Americans students math skills are eroding, according to a new report. ACT, which administers standardized exams used for college entrance, said that students who took the 2018 exam had the lowest readiness for college math since 2004. Only 40 percent of high school students met the ACT College Readiness Benchmark in math. That’s down from an ACT high of 46 percent in 2012, and the lowest mark since 2004, the ACT report noted.

Ohio State Rep. Andrew Thompson said Common Core does not deserve all the blame for the falling scores, but called it “a significant factor.” “I think testimony we took during our attempts to eradicate Common Core showed the dumbing down of curriculum, the social justice indoctrination, the emphasis on social-emotional learning, reduced quantity and quality of reading, emphasizing screen time rather than classroom instruction,” Thompson said, according to PJ Media. “Destruction of proper math has also been a contributing factor.” Common Core proponents, he said, “place a higher priority on indoctrination than education.”

In the ACT report, Roorda called the results “a red flag for our country, given the growing importance of math and science skills in the increasingly tech-driven U.S. and global job market.” A leading math teacher said the changes needed must take place in the classroom.

The report also noted that high school graduates college readiness in English is also slipping. The report said 60 percent were considered ready, based upon their scores, a drop from 64 percent in 2015. The 2018 level was the lowest since current benchmarks began to be used, ACT said.

you cant legislate good, supportive parenting
- as the son of two retired public school teachers. Their jobs are hard. They don't get paid shite. Their hands are tied when dealing with sorry arse parents that think they are state-funded babysitters. My folks only got one month in the summer, after working 10 hour days the rest of the year.

Who didn’t see this coming?

That’s why I teach my kids math the way I want them to learn it.
Common core math has some good foundational concepts. However, as the numbers get larger, the concepts don’t hold up.
ETA: example.
38 breaks down to 30 and 8. 41 + 42 = 40 + 40 + 1 + 2. Easy enough. Now do 1,384 + 3,578 without stacking. Breaking the numbers into smaller parts doesn’t work because the smaller parts are still big numbers that need to be broken down again. Pretty soon there is a string of 10 numbers to add instead of 4.

This is the issue I see with a lot of students. Teachers don't help in the fact that they force a student to work a problem a certain way. If a student understands how to do the math, they should not have to learn a new way to figure the problem out just because that's what the teacher says they should do. Let them solve the problem any way they know how.

Not a single mathematician I know believes common core makes any sense when it comes to teaching kids how to understand numbers

I have worked in education all of my life and honestly have never heard a teacher seriously say any of that except how difficult the job can be at times.
They have asked for annual salaries that are at or slightly above median household income which is then exaggerated in the general public perception of a teacher
We are no longer an agrarian society, we should do away with Summer vacation giving a 2 week break around independence day and a week break around Memorial
With as many standardized tests as we have today, teachers feel pressured to blitz through all of the material on the exam in the limited days they have to teach. Extending the school year would give greater flexibility to spend time on the more difficult topics.

I wonder if obama will take credit for this like he has the economy....

I agree, we've also drastically changed in the last decade. Books are now on IPads, everything is electronic, kids are addicted to technology, etc, etc. I'm not backing common core, at all, but theres a lot of factors at play.

I teach my student about bias every year. Here is a perfect example.

Our schools are a mess, and we spend more money per student than almost any country on earth.

Another issue with the Common Core method is it's useless if you don't have the underlying skills.
You can solve 80-17 in your head by changing it to 80-20+3. But not if you have no clue what 80-20 is.

While 2+2 is always 4, once you get beyond algebra I, there needs to be a better understanding to certain problems. There may be multiple ways to work them where only one way is essential to the next section or chapter or moving forward all together.
This obviously isn't a common core problem. But it's why today's students struggle with math applications (word problems).

Yep
The biggest gripe I have about today's society is we have shifted away from the responsibility of learning the material being on the student. Nowadays, if a student is struggling, we say the teacher is not doing enough.
Why does the student get a pass when they spend less and less time on class material at home and more time on IG, Snap, and Fortnite?

Hell no
The dropping scores are a biproduct of a population being dumbed down because the lower IQs are outbreeding the more intelligent. More class time isnt going to fix it

Common core is one of the dumbest things ever created.
